Volcarona official artwork

Volcarona is a Bug/Fire-type Pokémon, the Sun Pokémon, number 637 (#0637) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 46 kg.

Volcarona is the Sun Pokémon, a giant moth that cold lands revere as an embodiment of the sun. The Pokédex says its fire once stood in for a sun hidden by volcanic ash, yet in hot lands it is unpopular because it burns.

Lore

Biology

Volcarona is a 1.6 m, 46 kg moth with six orange wings dotted with small black spots. Its upper body is covered in smoky white fuzz, its black abdomen has light blue edges, and it has two shades of blue in its eyes and a red horn-like growth on each side of its face. It has four small feet.

Behaviour

Volcarona scatters burning scales as it flies, and the White entry says its wings create a sea of fire around its battles. The Violet entry warns the real danger is that the scales rob the air of oxygen. Sword's entry says some think it spreads them to start fires and others that it is trying to rescue those suffering in the cold. Ancient murals show it as a deity of fire.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet Volcarona is found in Area Zero and in 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles, and it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Volcarona dances with Quiver Dance, which lifts Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed, and burns with Fiery Dance, Heat Wave and Fire Blast. It also hits with Bug Buzz and Hurricane. Its Abilities are Flame Body and, hidden, Swarm. With base Special Attack 135, Special Defense 105 and Speed 100 it is a classic special sweeper.

Name origin

Volcarona may combine 'volcano' or Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, with 'corona', the sun's outer glow. The Japanese name is Ulgamoth (ウルガモス), perhaps from Vulcan (ウルカヌス Urukanusu), 蛾 ga ('moth') and 'moth'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests a garden tiger moth as the model, since that insect is tied to a Japanese proverb about summer insects flying into flames, and various sun gods may have played a part. Its wings may also resemble tiger lily petals. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Volcarona evolves from Larvesta at level 59.

In the games

A single Volcarona waits in Relic Castle in Black and White, and the same happens in Black 2 and White 2. In New Pokémon Snap, two Volcarona count among the glowing Illumina Pokémon that live in the Fireflow Volcano.

In the anime

Volcarona made its series debut in 'Guarding the Guardian of the Mountain!', where Ash, his friends and Brycen stopped the hunter Rizzo from catching a wild one. In Pokémon Generations, one in Relic Castle fights Red's Pikachu and loses to Volt Tackle.

Fun facts

  • Volcarona and its Paradox relative Iron Moth are the only Pokémon that can learn Fiery Dance.

  • Bulbapedia says Volcarona is one of only three Pokémon with both an ancient and a future Paradox relative, Slither Wing and Iron Moth, the others being Donphan and Cyclizar.
  • Volcarona shares its category, Sun Pokémon, with Espeon and Sunflora.
