First partners of every region

The 27 first partner Pokémon, from Bulbasaur to Quaxly, and the Grass, Fire and Water triangle they share.

Starter lesson · 4 minutes · 6 steps and a 5-question quiz

Your very first Pokémon

At the start of each main-series adventure, a professor offers you one of three Pokémon. The games now call them first partner Pokémon; the older word is “starters”.

In every main region the three are a Grass type, a Fire type and a Water type. In Kanto that is Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle.

Why those three types?

They form a perfect loop: Grass beats Water, Water beats Fire and Fire beats Grass.

So no pick is the best. Each first partner is strong against one of the others and weak against the third.

All 27 first partners

Here are all nine regions in order, Grass, Fire and Water. Tap any of them to open its Pokédex page.

Quick check

Rowlet, Litten and Popplio are the first partners of which region?

Answer: Alola. Alola, the Hawaii-inspired region of Sun and Moon.

Watch the final forms

Many first partners pick up a second type when they fully evolve.

Alola’s trio is a great example: Rowlet becomes Decidueye (Grass and Ghost), Litten becomes Incineroar (Fire and Dark) and Popplio becomes Primarina (Water and Fairy).

Quiz

The lesson ends with a five-question quiz built from the Pokédex data, and earns the Partner Pro badge.
