Little Dex: a Pokédex for little kids who can’t read yet

A Pokédex for little kids who can’t read yet: big pictures, every name said out loud, short facts read aloud, and three one-tap games. No tracking, no links out, and a grown-up gate.

Little Dex is the part of pokee.si made for children aged about 3 to 7. Everything works by tapping pictures and listening, so a child who cannot read yet can use it on their own: big Pokémon cards, every name said out loud, short facts read aloud, and three games with spoken instructions. It is designed for iPad first, in portrait or landscape, with buttons at least the size of a fingertip.

What your child can do

Browse big picture cards. Start with the First 151 (the favourites, Pikachu and Eevee first), or switch to all 1,025.Hear every name. Each card has a big play button that says the name, from a real recording made for pokee.si.Find Pokémon by colour or type. Bright colour circles and type circles with simple pictures, no words. Tapping one says what it is.Open a card. Huge art, the name spoken as it opens, three short facts read aloud (its type, how tall it is compared with things a child knows, and what it evolves into), the evolution line to tap and hear, and the type circle says “This is a Fire type.”Play three one-tap games. Find the Pokémon (hear a name, tap the right picture of three), Colour match (tap the Pokémon that is the colour you hear), and Big or small? (tap the taller of two, from the real heights). No timers and no losing: a wrong tap says the name of that Pokémon and lets them try again; a right tap gets a cheer, its cry, a star, and confetti every five stars.

Facts written for four-year-olds

Each fact is under 12 words and is worked out from the same checked data as the rest of pokee.si, never made up. Sizes are compared with a cat, a big dog, “you”, a grown-up, a door, an elephant, a giraffe or a house, using real heights. The facts are gentle: nothing scary from the Pokédex is read aloud. A few examples:

Pikachu

Pikachu is a yellow Electric Pokémon.Pikachu is about as tall as a cat.Pikachu can evolve into Raichu.

Eevee

Eevee is a Normal Pokémon.Eevee is about as tall as a cat.Eevee can evolve into eight different Pokémon!

How the voice works

Pokémon names play from recordings. The facts and instructions are read by your device’s own built-in voice (the same one used for “Speak screen”), so they work offline, and nothing is sent anywhere. A grown-up can pick the friendliest voice and the reading speed. One button turns all sound off.

Open to everyone and Plus

Open to everyone:

Every Pokémon card, all 1,025, with names and read-aloud factsColour and type findingAll three games, as often as you likeThe sticker book: every Pokémon your child meets leaves a sticker

With pokee.si Plus (£4.99 a month, which also covers the rest of the site):

Buying happens on the main site, behind a second grown-up check.
