Lore

Biology

Arcanine stands 1.9 m tall and weighs 155 kg. It is a large orange dog with jagged black stripes, shaggy beige fur on its head, muzzle and chest, tufts of fur trailing from each elbow and ankle, a black underside and a billowing, bent tail. Two pointed teeth poke down from its upper jaw. A fire blazes wildly inside its body and fuels its long runs.

Behaviour

Arcanine is brave and fiercely loyal, and the Pokédex writes about it with awe: its bark makes listeners want to bow, and the sight of it running has captivated many people. In the anime episode 'On Cloud Arcanine', a mother Arcanine carries food in her mane to her litter of Growlithe.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, but Bulbapedia says Arcanine is rarely wild, since it comes from an Evolution stone, and Pokémon Snap shows it on active volcanoes. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's North and South Provinces, and by evolving Growlithe in Kitakami; it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Intimidate and Flash Fire, with Justified hidden. Extreme Speed, a high-priority move, was its signature in Generation II, and it also uses Flare Blitz, Fire Fang, Flamethrower and Play Rough. Hisuian Arcanine is a Fire and Rock type that snaps with flame-wrapped fangs and dances around foes despite its bulk. With 110 base Attack and 100 base Special Attack it is a strong, fairly quick all-round attacker.

Name origin

Arcanine may combine 'arcane' and 'canine'. Its Japanese name, Windie (ウインディ), may refer to wind or 'windy', for its speed.

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Arcanine, and Megumi Mizutani designed the Hisuian form, according to Bulbapedia. It may be based on shisa or komainu, lion-dog guardian statues sometimes shown with dragon-like features, and its stripes recall a tiger. The mythical fire-eating dog xiezhi has also been suggested. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Arcanine evolves from Growlithe when it is exposed to a Fire Stone, and Hisuian Arcanine evolves from Hisuian Growlithe the same way. It cannot evolve further.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus, Hisuian Arcanine is the Noble of the Cobalt Coastlands, a Pokémon the people of Hisui worship. Arcanine debuted in Generation I. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5-star Tera Raid Battles, and the Hisuian form arrives through Pokémon HOME.

In the anime

Gary Oak's Arcanine debuted in 'The Battle of the Badge', where it beat Giovanni's Kingler despite the type disadvantage, and it became one of Gary's most used Pokémon. Kent's Arcanine debuted in 'Where I Belong' in Pokémon Concierge, where it rescued Haru during a rainstorm.

Fun facts

  • In the Red and Green beta its English name was Blaze, and Bulbapedia says it originally had no stripes and had hooves.

  • No other Pokémon that evolves with a stone has a higher base stat total than Arcanine's 555; Florges comes closest with 552.
