Arctibax is the middle stage of Frigibax's line, a Dragon and Ice type that does front flips in mid-air and slashes with a blade of ice grown on its dorsal fin. It freezes the air around its face into a mask.

Lore

Biology

Arctibax is a bluish-grey, theropod-like dinosaur, 0.8 m tall and 30 kg. A jagged light blue pattern runs across its underside, and it has a large, dark grey, triangular dorsal fin, bluish-white claws and long orange V-shaped quills growing from the back of each hand. The Scarlet Pokédex says it freezes the air around it into an ice mask that guards its face and turns its fin into a blade of ice; Bulbapedia adds that the mask covers its mouth and eyes, with the eye part looking like eyebrows.

Behaviour

Arctibax is agile. The Violet Pokédex says its strong back and legs let it do a front flip and attack with its frozen fin while airborne, and the Legends: Z-A entry says it springs at foes to deliver slashing attacks.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it is rarely seen in the wild but may turn up in certain caverns.

Powers

Like the rest of its line it has Thermal Exchange, with Ice Body as the hidden Ability. It learns Icy Wind, Dragon Breath, Ice Fang, Take Down, Ice Beam, Crunch and Icicle Crash. With 90 HP and 95 Attack it is a solid mid-stage attacker.

Name origin

Arctibax may combine arctic, back and axe. The Japanese name is Segohru (セゴール), possibly from se ('back') and kōru ('to freeze').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Arctibax may be based on Spinosaurus, with the sail-backed Ouranosaurus, Arizonasaurus and Dimetrodon as other candidates. No designer is credited, and these are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Arctibax evolves from Frigibax at level 35 and into Baxcalibur at level 54.

In the games

A wild Arctibax waits on Glaseado Mountain in Scarlet and Violet, where the species debuted. In Legends: Z-A it turns up in the wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Arctibax debuted in 'Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!' under a Student's ownership, and a Student's Arctibax appeared in 'Terastallization vs. Mega Evolution!'.

Fun facts

  • It is the only member of its line that cannot learn Dragon Claw by levelling up, and Bulbapedia suspects an oversight because of the big level gap between the moves around the missing slot.
  • In the anime, an Arctibax battled a Dachsbun in 'Hamber's Moonlight Battle' while the Strong Sphere was affecting it.
  • Arctibax and Baxcalibur can learn Iron Head by TM, but Frigibax cannot.
