Frigibax official artwork

Frigibax is a Dragon/Ice-type Pokémon, the Ice Fin Pokémon, number 996 (#0996) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 17 kg.

Frigibax is a small Dragon and Ice type that soaks up heat through its dorsal fin and turns it into ice, which it uses to keep its nest as cold as a refrigerator. The hotter the weather, the more ice energy it stores.

Lore

Biology

Frigibax is a stout, grey, upright reptile, 0.5 m tall and 17 kg, with a big head, a pale snout, a light blue belly and short stubby limbs. A square ice crystal sits under its lip, and a thin yellow quill sticks out of the back of each hand. The triangular dorsal fin on its back, set on a pale circle, is the part that soaks up heat.

Behaviour

Frigibax keeps a nest, and the Violet Pokédex says it uses its fin to cool the inside of it. Bulbapedia says it fights with Bergmite whenever the two meet, and in the anime Frigibax settle quarrels by comparing their yellow quills, with the longest and most colourful quills winning.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in forests and craggy areas. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Dalizapa Passage and on Glaseado Mountain.

Powers

Its Ability Thermal Exchange boosts its Attack whenever a Fire-type move hits it and stops it being burned, and its hidden Ability is Ice Body. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex says its fin turns the heat of fire attacks into Ice-type energy, which matches how Thermal Exchange works in battle. It learns Icy Wind, Dragon Breath, Ice Fang, Dragon Claw, Ice Beam and Icicle Crash. With 75 Attack it is a modest early Dragon whose real value is its evolutions.

Name origin

Frigibax may combine frigid, back and axe. The Japanese name is Sebie (セビエ), possibly from sebire ('dorsal fin') and hie ('coldness').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Frigibax looks like a baby dinosaur, possibly Concavenator, a theropod with arm quills and a back crest that may have helped it regulate its temperature. It may also draw on kaiju. No designer is credited, and these are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Frigibax evolves into Arctibax at level 35, and Arctibax becomes Baxcalibur at level 54.

In the games

Frigibax can be found in the wild and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. In Legends: Z-A it turns up in the wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Frigibax debuted in 'Roy and Fuecoco's First Snow!', where one appeared in front of a Bergmite and started a battle between them.
