Audino official artwork

Audino is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Hearing Pokémon, number 531 (#0531) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 31 kg.

Audino has a stethoscope-like feeler on each ear, and it presses them to people and Pokémon to hear their heartbeats and work out how they feel. The Pokédex adds that it can tell when an Egg might hatch.

Lore

Biology

Audino is 1.1 m tall and 31 kg, pink on the head, back and arms and cream on the lower face, front and floppy ears, with a chest pattern that looks like a jacket. Thin curled feelers hang from the undersides of its ears, and it has a puffy white tail. Its hearing is superb: the Pokédex says a pebble rolling more than 1.6 km (1 mile) away will not escape its ears.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Audino has a kind heart. It touches others with its feelers to judge their feelings and physical condition, and its radar-like hearing lets it read its surroundings from slight sounds.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Unova, Black and White have it in rustling grass.

Powers

Its Abilities are Healer and Regenerator, with Klutz hidden. It supports with Heal Pulse, Life Dew, Helping Hand and Entrainment and hits with Hyper Voice and Zen Headbutt. With 103 HP and 86 in both Defense and Special Defense it is a sturdy healer. Mega Audino is Normal and Fairy and keeps Healer, raising Defense and Special Defense to 126; Bulbapedia says that is the highest base Defense of any Normal-type Pokémon, and its pulses can reduce hostility while its secondary feelers put anyone who touches them into a deep sleep.

Name origin

Audino may come from 'audio' with a pun on 'I dunno'. The Japanese name is Tabunne (タブンネ), perhaps a pun on tabun ne ('maybe') or on tabun, 'hearing many things'.

Design inspiration

Saya Tsuruta designed Audino, and Bulbapedia reports Ken Sugimori saying it was designed with Black and White in mind, as a stand-in for Nurse Joy's Chansey in Unova. It appears to be partly based on a rabbit with a nurse's or doctor's manner, and its feelers resemble stethoscopes, or possibly the cochlea of the inner ear.

In the games

In Super Mystery Dungeon, Audino is the school nurse and village doctor of Serene Village, and it first appeared in Black and White. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zones 7 and 19 and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Audino debuted in 'Dreams by the Yard Full!', where Cilan explained that Unova's Nurse Joys use it instead of Chansey. A Kalosian Nurse Joy's Audino spends 'A Giga Battle with Mega Results!' hunting for an Audinite so it can Mega Evolve.

Fun facts

  • Its base experience yield of 390 and its presence in rustling grass made wild Audino a fast levelling trick in Black and White and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Bulbapedia notes.
  • Mega Audino leaked early when the official Korean Pokémon website showed it on 12 August 2014, two days before Junichi Masuda's official release of it.
  • Before Legends: Z-A, Audino was the sole Generation V Pokémon able to Mega Evolve.
  • May's Mega Audino appears in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire animated trailer, entering a Pokémon Contest Spectacular beside Mega Altaria.
