Lore
Biology
Blitzle is a black zebra foal with thick white stripes that come to double points, running over its hind legs, back, chest and neck. Its eyes are blue, its legs are white below the knees with black hooves, and its short tail is white and two-pointed. A spiky white mane runs up its neck and ends in a lightning-bolt tuft; the mane captures and stores electricity. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 29.8 kg.
Behaviour
Blitzle flashes its mane as it discharges electricity, and the Pokédex says herd members use the frequency and rhythm of the flashes to talk to each other. Its heart generates the electricity, so a fright that speeds up its heartbeat also raises the voltage.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it prefers places with many lightning strikes and appears when thunderclouds cover the sky. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives with The Indigo Disk, living in the Terarium's Savanna Biome and appearing in 1-star Tera Raid Battles. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Lightning Rod and Motor Drive absorb Electric moves, and the hidden Sap Sipper does the same for Grass moves. It attacks with Spark, Discharge and Wild Charge, backed by Quick Attack and Thunder Wave. Its base Speed of 76 is its best stat, which fits a small zebra built to run.
Name origin
Blitzle may combine Blitz (German for 'lightning') with 'little'. The Japanese name is Shimama (シママ), possibly from shimauma, 'zebra'.
Design inspiration
Blitzle resembles a zebra foal. Bulbapedia suggests that, like Zebstrika, it may nod to Bronte and Sterope, the Greek words for thunder and lightning, which name two of the steeds that pulled the sun god Helios's chariot. That is a fan reading.
Evolution notes
Blitzle evolves into Zebstrika at level 27.
In the games
Players first meet Blitzle on Route 3 in Black and White, its debut games. In Black 2 and White 2 Bulbapedia lists breeding a Zebstrika as the way to get one.
In the anime
Stephan's Blitzle debuted in 'Oshawott's Lost Scalchop!', where it made Oshawott lose his scalchop before losing a rematch against Ash.
