Lore

Biology

Braviary is 1.5 m tall and 41 kg, with dark red and dark blue feathers, a long thick beak and thick yellow legs. A crest of long white feathers rises from its head, with a mane of white feathers behind it. The Pokédex says one can lift a car and fly with it.

Behaviour

Braviary is brave and proud, and the Pokédex says ancient Alolan people called it the hero of the sky. Because it is hotheaded and belligerent, Corviknight took the job of flying transport in Galar instead, and Braviary is often used as a motif for emblems.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; the Moon entry says Braviary banded together to fight back when people disturbed their habitats. In Scarlet and Violet the Unovan form soars over Asado Desert and North Province Area One.

Powers

Its Abilities are Keen Eye and Sheer Force, with Defiant hidden. It learns Superpower on evolving, and later Air Slash and Thrash. Hisuian Braviary is a Psychic and Flying type with Esper Wing as a signature move and the Hidden Ability Tinted Lens. The Pokédex says its battle cry sends out shock waves that make lake prey float to the surface. Braviary has Attack 123, while the Hisuian form trades it for Special Attack 112.

Name origin

Braviary may combine 'brave' or 'bravery' with 'aviary', and may also involve 'eyrie'. The Japanese name is Warrgle (ウォーグル), which may blend 'war' or 'warrior' with 'eagle'.

Design inspiration

Takao Unno designed the Unovan Braviary, a bald eagle whose head crest resembles a Native American war bonnet. Such bonnets were traditionally worn only by men, which Bulbapedia presumes explains its all-male gender ratio. Hisuian Braviary seems modelled on the Steller's sea eagle, which travels south to Hokkaido, the real-life model for Hisui. The Ainu consider that eagle a kamuy, or divine being, which may explain the Psychic type. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Braviary evolves from Rufflet at level 54. In Hisui, Rufflet evolves into the Hisuian form instead.

In the games

Hisuian Braviary has a supporting role in Legends: Arceus as one of the Ride Pokémon. The Unovan form first appeared in Black and White and is in Scarlet and Violet, with the Hisuian form available by evolving a Rufflet from Legends: Arceus through HOME. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Soren's Braviary debuted in 'A Surface to Air Tag Battle Team!', and its Brave Bird became part of a combination called Jet Brave. Professor Kukui's Braviary helped Professor Burnet escape from Jangmo-o and Hakamo-o in 'Revealing the Stuff of Legend!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that Legends: Arceus's internal code gives Hisuian Braviary the Hidden Ability Defiant instead of Tinted Lens.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Braviary's Shiny form has brown feathers, which brings it closer to the real eagle it resembles.
  • Nintendo's first official reveals of Hisuian forms were Hisuian Braviary and Hisuian Growlithe.
  • Braviary and Mandibuzz are counterparts: both are part Flying with a base stat total of 510, but Braviary is always male and Mandibuzz always female.
