Rufflet official artwork

Rufflet is a Normal/Flying-type Pokémon, the Eaglet Pokémon, number 627 (#0627) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 10.5 kg.

Rufflet is the Eaglet Pokémon, a chick that challenges its own parent to a fight soon after hatching. The Pokédex says it grows stronger each time it faints or is injured, and it bursts into tears when it loses.

Rufflet is pronounced RUF-lit. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Rufflet is 0.5 m tall and 10.5 kg, a small blue bird with a big white ruff of feathers over its head and chest and a red and white feather standing from its forehead. Its yellow feet are large for its size, and its black talons are strong enough to crush hard berries.

Behaviour

Rufflet is a natural-born warrior that will take on anything, even much bigger Pokémon, and the Pokédex calls this recklessness rather than courage. Soon after hatching it challenges its parent to a fight to gain acceptance. When it loses, it starts bawling.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it ranges across Paldea's deserts, mountains and mines and the Terarium's prairie.

Diet

The Pokédex calls it a carnivore at heart that also eats berries; it cracks open Shellder shells to pluck out the insides, and Bulbapedia adds that it preys on Spewpa.

Powers

Its Abilities are Keen Eye, which stops its accuracy being lowered, and Sheer Force, which trades the side effects of moves for extra power; Hustle is hidden. It learns Wing Attack, Aerial Ace, Slash, Crush Claw and Air Slash. With base Attack 83 it hits hard for a first stage.

Name origin

Rufflet may combine 'rough', 'ruff' or 'ruffle' with 'eaglet', a young eagle. The Japanese name is Washibon (ワシボン), which may mix washi, 'eagle', or Washington, with bon, 'boy'.

Design inspiration

Takao Unno designed Rufflet and its evolution. Bulbapedia, citing a Nintendo Dream interview, says the team wanted American touches for Unova, a region based on the New York area: Rufflet is a bald eagle chick, and its red, white and blue colouring comes from the US flag.

Evolution notes

Rufflet evolves into Braviary at level 54, but in Hisui it evolves into Hisuian Braviary instead, also at level 54.

In the games

Rufflet is a White-version exclusive in Black and White, where it is found on Routes 10 and 11. It appears in the Alabaster Icelands in Legends: Arceus and is widespread in Scarlet and Violet, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Rufflet debuted in 'Unrest at the Nursery!' as a resident of Layla's daycare, where a feud with Vullaby ended when he saved her from three Amoonguss.

Fun facts

  • Rufflet and Vullaby are counterparts: Rufflet is always male and Vullaby always female, both are 0.5 m tall and evolve at level 54, and in Black and White each was exclusive to one version.
  • In Scarlet and Violet's data, Rufflet's own level-up list reaches Brave Bird at level 72, 18 levels after the level 54 at which it normally evolves.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Black caught the Rufflet that became his Braviary, Brav, after Bianca accidentally stepped on its food.
