Lore

Biology

Carracosta is a bipedal blue sea turtle with a pale blue belly. Deep blue rocky growths form a mask on its face and a shell over its back and sides. It has long flippers with black, finger-like tips, a thick tail and short, two-toed legs. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 81 kg.

Behaviour

Carracosta hunts on land and in the sea. The Moon Pokédex says that when prey is on land, it hauls it into the water to finish the job, and the Shield entry adds that it is slower on land.

Habitat

Bulbapedia calls it extinct, though the Black Pokédex says it lived in both the ocean and on land. In Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra it wanders the Frigid Sea. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says it eats every last bit of its prey, bones and shells included, which keeps its shell thick, and that it could swallow Omastar and Omanyte whole.

Powers

Carracosta shares Tirtouga's Abilities: Solid Rock and Sturdy, with Swift Swim hidden. It learns Shell Smash, Aqua Jet, Crunch, Rock Slide and Hydro Pump. With 108 Attack and 133 Defense it hits hard behind its shell, but its Speed is only 32.

Name origin

Carracosta may combine 'carapace' with costa, Latin for 'rib', and may also involve costa as 'coast' and 'accost'. The Japanese name is Abagoura (アバゴーラ), which may blend abarabone ('rib'), kōra ('shell') and abareru ('to thrash').

Design inspiration

Carracosta shares Tirtouga's sea turtle basis. Its blue skin and dark grey shell match a leatherback's colours, and its steel-beam diet may nod to real sea turtles bending metal bars with their jaws. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Carracosta evolves from Tirtouga at level 37 and is the end of the line.

In the games

In Super Mystery Dungeon Carracosta is the stern but well-meaning guardian who adopted the partner Pokémon. In Black and White, where it debuted, the only way to get one is to evolve a revived Tirtouga.

In the anime

Carracosta debuted in a flashback in 'A Restoration Confrontation! Part 1', defending young Ferris and a Tirtouga from attacking Archen. In the next episode, that Tirtouga evolved into one.
