Lore

Biology

Cetitan is a bulky white whale with pink rings around its eyes, big forelimbs and legs, and a grey underside spotted with white circles. Horns grow from the top of its head and around its wavy mouth. It is 4.5 m (14 ft 9 in) tall and weighs 700 kg (1,543.2 lb). The Pokédex says ice energy gathers in the horn on its upper jaw until it reaches cryogenic temperatures, and that strong muscles and a thick fat layer beneath its skin protect its body.

Behaviour

Cetitan wanders snowy, icy areas. Bulbapedia, citing the series Pokémon: Paldean Winds, says it lives in pods, uses echolocation to talk to others of its kind, and makes sounds like a flute. In the anime it moves faster over snow by sliding on its belly.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it wanders snowy, icy areas. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain in Paldea's North Province.

Powers

Cetitan has Thick Fat, which halves damage from Fire and Ice moves, or Slush Rush, which doubles its Speed in snowy weather, with Sheer Force hidden. Its moves include Ice Spinner, Avalanche, Blizzard, Bounce and Double-Edge. With 170 base HP and 113 base Attack it is a sturdy, hard-hitting Ice type.

Name origin

Cetitan appears to combine 'cetacean' or Cetus with 'titan'. The Japanese name is Hulkujira (ハルクジラ), which may blend 'hulk', aruku ('to walk') and kujira ('whale'), and may pun on hakujira (歯鯨), the toothed whale.

Design inspiration

Cetitan appears to be based mainly on the right whale, which has a highly arched mouth, a round body with no dorsal fin, and horn-like skin patches on its head. Bulbapedia notes that the North Atlantic right whale is called Eubalaena glacialis, roughly 'true whale of ice', and that the Ningen, a Japanese modern legend of a huge white whale-like creature with limbs, could also have inspired it. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Cetitan is what Cetoddle becomes when an Ice Stone is used on it.

In the games

In Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, Cetitan is a 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battle opponent. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Cetitan debuted in 'Ice Battle! Cold-Eyed Grusha', where Grusha used it against Liko's Floragato and Hattrem in a Tera Training battle and beat Hattrem. In the Pokémon: Paldean Winds episode 'Breathe Out', a wild Cetitan chases Arven around Glaseado Mountain until Ohara's flute soothes it.
