Cetoddle official artwork

Cetoddle is a Ice-type Pokémon, the Terra Whale Pokémon, number 974 (#0974) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 45 kg.

Cetoddle is the Terra Whale Pokémon, a small white Ice type that left the sea long ago and now waddles about snowy slopes on two stubby legs. The Scarlet Pokédex says it seems closely related to Wailmer, which makes its story the reverse of how real whales began.

Lore

Biology

Cetoddle is a round white whale with large eyes, a wide curved mouth, long fin-like forelimbs and a big tail. Pink marks sit around its eyes and on its hands, feet and tail, and a single horn grows from its forehead. It is 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) tall and weighs 45 kg (99.2 lb).

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Cetoddle lives in pods of five or so. Its Pokémon Sleep entry adds that it can turn grumpy in its sleep and thump the ground as if panicking, perhaps dreaming that the group has left it behind.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in frigid regions. In Scarlet and Violet it is found on the snowy slopes of Glaseado Mountain and around Dalizapa Passage in Paldea.

Diet

The Pokédex says it is fond of the minerals in snow and ice.

Powers

Cetoddle has Thick Fat, which halves damage from Fire and Ice moves, or Snow Cloak, with Sheer Force as its hidden Ability. It uses Powder Snow, Ice Shard, Avalanche and Ice Spinner. A base HP of 108 against a Speed of 43 makes it bulky but slow.

Name origin

Cetoddle appears to blend 'cetacean' or Cetus, the sea monster of Greek myth, with 'toddle' or 'toddler'. The Japanese name is Arukujira (アルクジラ), likely from aruku ('to walk') and kujira ('whale').

Design inspiration

Yusuke Kozaki designed Cetoddle and Cetitan. Bulbapedia reads Cetoddle as a mix of Arctic whales: the bowhead for its shape, the beluga for its white colour and big head, and the narwhal for its single horn, with a dash of toddler. Its move from sea to land is the opposite of real whale history, since whales began on land.

Evolution notes

Cetoddle becomes Cetitan when an Ice Stone is used on it, with no level requirement.

In the games

In Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, Cetoddle lives in the snowy north of Paldea and also turns up in 3 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A group of Cetoddle made the species' anime debut in 'Ice Battle! Cold-Eyed Grusha', carrying tourists at a snowboarding event, and Grusha has one of his own. Two wild Cetoddle also appear in the spin-off series Pokémon: Paldean Winds.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia lists Cetoddle and Cetitan as the only known Pokémon that can learn Ice Spinner by levelling up.
  • The French name Piétacé blends pied ('foot') with cétacé, and the German name Flaniwal pairs the verb flanieren ('to stroll') with the word for whale: both, like the Japanese name, joke about walking.
  • Pokémon Sleep gives Cetoddle four sleep styles, including Atop-Belly Sleep.
