Flamigo official artwork

Flamigo is a Flying/Fighting-type Pokémon, the Synchronize Pokémon, number 973 (#0973) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 37 kg.

Flamigo is a flamingo that ties its neck in a knot, and the Pokédex says flocks of over 10,000 can attack together in perfect harmony. That behaviour is called synchronising, and the sight is said to be something to behold.

How to pronounce Flamigo

Flamigo is pronounced fluh-MEE-goh. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Flamigo is 1.6 m tall and weighs 37 kg. Most of its body is pink, with a rounded shape, a white face, a black-tipped curved beak and tall thin white legs, and it usually stands on one leg. The Pokédex says it apparently knots the base of its long neck to stop the energy kept in its belly leaking out of its beak. Bulbapedia says it attacks by untying its neck and swinging its head rapidly.

Behaviour

Flamigo is social and lives in huge flocks near water and wetlands. Through synchronising, an entire flock can strike at once.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Flamigo lives near bodies of water and wetlands. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in all four Paldean provinces, including Casseroya Lake, and in 4-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Scrappy lets its Normal and Fighting moves hit Ghost types, Tangled Feet doubles its evasion when confused, and its hidden Ability, Costar, copies an ally's stat changes when it enters battle. It strikes with Wing Attack and Air Slash, kicks with Low Kick and Mega Kick, and finishes with Brave Bird at level 54. With base Attack 115 and Speed 90 it is a strong physical attacker.

Name origin

Flamigo may combine 'flamingo' and amigo (Spanish and Portuguese for 'friend'). The Japanese name is Karamingo (カラミンゴ), which may join karamu ('to entangle') and 'flamingo'.

Design inspiration

Flamigo appears to be based on the flamingo, and Bulbapedia notes Spain has Europe's largest flamingo population, which fits Paldea. Its knotted neck and shape may recall balloon animals, boxing gloves or plastic lawn flamingos, and its Fighting type may refer to the elaborate synchronised courtship dances of real flamingos. These are fan readings.

In the games

Flamigo is found in all four Paldean provinces in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted as number 346 in the Paldea Pokédex. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, in the 4-star Flying-type wild zones.

In the anime

Two Flamigo debuted in 'Dot and Nidothing', each with a different Trainer. Larry's Flamigo briefly appears in 'Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four', where Coral's Glalie beats it.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can have Costar as an Ability.
  • According to the Pokécology book cited by Bulbapedia, Dondozo is its natural predator, and Tatsugiri usually lures a Flamigo in so Dondozo can ambush it.
  • Bulbapedia notes a visual error in Flamigo's Paldea Pokédex image, which shows two Flamigo whose wings are drawn both open and tucked in at the same time.
