Lore

Biology

Chansey is a pink, egg-shaped Pokémon with stubby arms, dark pink feet, tiny eyes, a short tail and three hair-like tufts either side of its head. The single white egg in its pouch is rich in nutrients, and it lays several new ones a day. It is 1.1 m tall and 34.6 kg, and it is a female-only species.

Behaviour

Chansey is kind and shares its egg with injured people and Pokémon, but the Pokédex says it will not give one to anyone with evil in their heart. It walks carefully so its egg does not break, and the Pokédex says the species was once very slow before fleeing egg-seekers made it quick.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in urban areas. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles, and The Indigo Disk adds the Savanna Biome. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Chansey's Abilities are Natural Cure, which cures status problems on switching out, and Serene Grace, which boosts secondary effects; Healer is hidden. It learns Soft-Boiled and Heal Pulse. A base HP of 250 and Special Defense of 105 make it a sturdy supporter, but its Attack and Defense are both only 5.

Name origin

Chansey may come from 'chance' or 'chancy'. The Japanese name is Lucky (ラッキー), literally 'lucky', and that was also its English name in the Red and Green beta.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests Chansey is built on the idea of luck, from its rarity and slippery escapes, and fills the usual medic role of role-playing games. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Happiny becomes Chansey when it levels up in the daytime while carrying an Oval Stone, and Chansey becomes Blissey on levelling up with high friendship.

In the games

Chansey stars in the Egg Emergency mini-game in Pokémon Stadium 2, where you catch falling eggs and dodge Voltorb. It is a Generation I original and appears in the Pokémon Centers of Yellow and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!

In the anime

Chansey debuted in 'Pokémon Emergency!' as the assistant of a Nurse Joy, and most Nurse Joys in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh use one. Mollie of the Rising Volt Tacklers has a Chansey, first seen in 'For Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says no known Pokémon besides Chansey can use the Lucky Punch item.
  • When the Special stat was split in two in Generation II, Chansey lost 70 points of Special Attack, the biggest Special cut any Pokémon took, says Bulbapedia.
  • In Legends: Arceus, a hurt player is checked on by nearby Chansey, who then run off once you are fully healed, without actually healing you.

The egg Chansey carries is not only delicious but also packed with nutrition. It's used as a high-class cooking ingredient. (Sword)

A gentle and kindhearted Pokémon that shares its nutritious eggs if it sees an injured Pokémon. (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

Because the eggs on their bellies have been overharvested by people in the past, the Chansey population remains very small. (Ultra Moon)
