Lore

Biology

Blissey is a large, egg-shaped Pokémon with a pink upper body and a white lower half, with hair-like curls at each side of its head. White tufts at its hips and shoulders give it a dress-like outline. Its stubby pink arms and feet have no fingers or toes, and a little pink pouch on its belly holds one egg. It stands 1.5 m tall and weighs 46.8 kg, and it is female-only.

Behaviour

Blissey is overflowing with kindness. The Pokédex says that when it finds a weakened Pokémon it shares its egg and offers care until the other is better. The egg is said to calm even the fiercest Pokémon, and the Pokédex adds that these eggs command the top prices in markets.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in urban areas, and Bulbapedia says wild sightings are rare. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in North Province Areas One to Three and appears in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles; The Indigo Disk adds the Coastal and Savanna Biomes and the Torchlit Labyrinth. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Natural Cure and Serene Grace, with Healer hidden. It heals with Soft-Boiled, Heal Pulse and Healing Wish, and backs allies with Helping Hand and Light Screen. Base HP 255 and Special Defense 135 make it the classic special wall, while its Attack is only 10.

Name origin

Blissey may combine 'bliss' with the '-sey' ending of Chansey. The Japanese name is Happinas (ハピナス), perhaps from 'happiness' and 'nurse', and possibly nasu (茄子, 'eggplant') for the egg theme.

Design inspiration

Blissey seems modelled on a nurse, sharing its colours and curls with the anime's Nurse Joy. Its egg pouch also recalls an echidna or marsupial, and it may simply stand for motherhood. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Blissey evolves from Chansey when it levels up with high friendship, and is the end of the line.

In the games

Blissey is a playable melee supporter in Pokémon UNITE, where it starts as Chansey and evolves at level 4. In the core series it debuted in Gold and Silver, where the only way to get one is to evolve a Chansey.

In the anime

Blissey debuted in 'Ignorance is Blissey', where the Happy Town Nurse Joy's Blissey turned out to be a friend of Jessie from nursing school. Brock's Chansey evolved into a Blissey in 'The Arceus Chronicles (Part 2)'.

Fun facts

  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo it appears to have been a separate Pokémon called Happī, evolving from Chansey at level 45 and carrying several egg pouches.
  • Its base HP of 255 is matched only by Eternamax Eternatus, and Bulbapedia calculates that a maxed-out, Dynamaxed level 100 Blissey reaches 1,428 HP, the most of any Pokémon.
  • Blissey's base experience yield has been the highest of any Pokémon since Generation III, and Bulbapedia says it is the only one that exceeds its own base stat total of 540.
  • Blissey and Togetic are the only Pokémon filed as the Happiness Pokémon.
