Lore
Biology
Chatot is 0.5 m tall and 1.9 kg, with blue wings, a yellow breast and feet, a green belly, a pink hooked beak and a white ruff. Its black crest is shaped like a musical note. The Pokédex says its tongue is much like ours, which is how it manages speech, and Bulbapedia adds that it arranges the sounds it learns into melodies of its own.
Behaviour
Chatot imitates other Pokémon's calls so that they take it for one of their own and do not attack. Where several gather, the Diamond Pokédex says they all learn the same saying.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat; Bulbapedia says it lives along bodies of water and is active in the daytime. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Keen Eye and Tangled Feet, with Big Pecks hidden. Its signature move is Chatter, and Bulbapedia says it is the only known Pokémon that can learn it. Hyper Voice, Echoed Voice, Mimic and Mirror Move suit its mimicry. With Special Attack 92 and Speed 91 it is a quick special attacker.
Name origin
Chatot may combine 'chat' and 'parrot'. The Japanese name is Perap (ペラップ), which may blend perapera ('fluently' or 'chatty'), 'parrot' and 'rap'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia reads Chatot as a parrot, with a body like a conure or yellow-collared lovebird and colours like a blue-and-yellow macaw. Its crest resembles an eighth note and its tail a metronome, perhaps a nod to parrots that imitate human speech.
In the games
Chatot is Wigglytuff's assistant at the guild in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, and the guide of PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure. It first appeared in Diamond and Pearl and also appears in Legends: Arceus.
In the anime
A Chatot first appeared in the anime in 'Strategy Tomorrow - Comedy Tonight', where it kept slipping away to a hospital to cheer up the children. In 'All Dressed Up With Somewhere To Go!', a Chatot won a dress-up contest with a Jigglypuff-and-Lapras singing routine.
Fun facts
- In the Generation IV Sinnoh games, a boy in Eterna City hands over a Chatot for a Buizel, and the bird's nickname, Charap, blends its English and Japanese names.
- Bulbapedia says Chatot is the only Pokémon outside the Legendary and Mythical groups that was banned from the Global Battle Union in Generation V, probably because Chatter could play back pre-recorded audio.
- Before Generation VI, Bulbapedia says, no other Pokémon matched Chatot in keeping an unchanged cry when it fainted or was sent out with a status condition.
