Lore
Biology
Spiritomb has no body of its own. A swirl of purple energy with a jagged-mouthed face, ringed by green orbs, is projected from the Odd Keystone, whose crack and two dots form a frown. It is 1 m tall and weighs 108 kg. The Pokédex says it was formed from 108 spirits, some ill-natured, and that a traveller bound it to the stone with a mysterious spell as punishment for its mischief, with one entry saying 500 years ago.
Behaviour
Spiritomb lays curses with its wicked thoughts, the Legends: Arceus Pokédex says. Bulbapedia says it lashes out with little thought and is rarely met in the wild, and the Pokémon Sleep Pokédex says it fidgets even while asleep, perhaps because each spirit dreams on its own.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat; it is tied to the Odd Keystone. In Scarlet and Violet it appears only at fixed encounters at Casseroya Lake and Glaseado Mountain. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Pressure, which makes moves aimed at it cost extra PP, and Infiltrator, hidden, which bypasses barriers such as Reflect, Light Screen and Safeguard. Hex, Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, Curse and Memento suit its spooky side. Defense and Special Defense of 108 but only 35 Speed make it a slow, tough wall.
Name origin
Spiritomb may combine 'spirit' and 'tomb', and may play on Latin spiritum, 'spirit'. The Japanese name is Mikaruge (ミカルゲ), which may come from mikageishi (granite), with karuishi (pumice) and possibly 'karma' also involved.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia suggests a jibakurei, a spirit bound to one place, or the Norwegian Deildegast, forced to haul a boundary stone. The 108 may echo a Japanese New Year bell rung 108 times, and the Chinese novel Water Margin, where 108 sealed spirits are freed. These are fan readings.
In the games
Spiritomb waits at Hallowed Tower on Route 209 in Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted, and in Legends: Arceus you can earn it by gathering Wisps scattered across Hisui. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness it is the boss of Sealed Ruin.
In the anime
Spiritomb debuted in 'The Keystone Pops!' when Buizel knocked down Hallowed Tower, and Ash had to beat and reseal it. In 'The Spectral Express!', one of its spirits possessed Ash until it was returned. Cynthia's Spiritomb faced Ash in 'Bewitch, Battle, and Bewilder!'.
