Lore
Biology
Gible is 0.7 m tall and 20.5 kg, a grey-blue, shark-like dragon with no neck, arms that start at the edges of its jaws, a red belly and two jet-engine-like horns. The male has a notch in its dorsal fin. Despite the big mouth, its stomach is small, the Pokédex says.
Behaviour
Gible attacks anything that moves and hauls its catch back to its lair, a crevice. The Pokédex says it sometimes hurts itself but does not care much. Bulbapedia adds that it huddles with others when it is cold and enjoys play-fighting with them.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it nests in caves heated by geothermal energy, and that it once lived in the tropics. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in caves in South and West Province, Area Zero and Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A it is in the Jaune District's Wild Zone 8 and, in the Mega Dimension DLC, Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Its Abilities are Sand Veil, which raises evasion in a sandstorm, and Rough Skin, hidden, which hurts attackers that touch it. Sand Tomb, Dragon Breath, Bite, Dragon Claw and Dig are its attacks. With 58 HP and 70 Attack it is modest, but its line finishes with a stat total of 600.
Name origin
Gible may combine 'gobble' and 'nibble'. The Japanese name is Fukamaru (フカマル), which may blend fuka (shark) with maru (round, a common ending for boys' names), and puns on fukamaru, 'to deepen'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Gible has traits of sharks, notably the hammerhead, and its duller colours, red belly and rounder shape could hint at a red-bellied piranha. Its life on land may nod to the land shark, a creature that turns up in fantasy stories. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Gible evolves into Gabite at level 24, and Gabite into Garchomp at level 48.
In the games
Gible is found in Wayward Cave in Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted. In Scarlet and Violet, Hassel's Gible, nicknamed Professor Gible, appears in two of his art classes.
In the anime
Ash's Gible failed to master Draco Meteor in 'A Meteoric Rise to Excellence!' and joined his team in 'Gotta Get a Gible!'. The species' animated debut was 'A Rivalry to Gible On!', where Khoury beat Ash to catching one.
Fun facts
- The Gible line debuted in the anime in reverse order: Garchomp in 'Top-Down Training!', Gabite in 'Another One Gabites the Dust!', and Gible last in 'A Rivalry to Gible On!'.
- Bulbapedia notes that in the anime Gible can eat through most types of metal.
- In the Japanese games, Hassel's Gible is called Fukamaru-senpai, 'senior Gible'.
