Lore
Biology
Gabite is 1.4 m tall and 56 kg, a blue dragon with a light blue underside, a red belly and jaw, and fins on its arms, back and tail. Two head appendages emit ultrasonic waves that let it probe pitch-dark caves, according to the Pokédex. The back fin carries a notch on males. The Pokédex says it sometimes molts, and its shed scales can be milled to a powder for traditional medicine.
Behaviour
Gabite is fierce and territorial. It digs to expand its nest, unearths gems and hoards them there, and the Pokédex says it turns on any Sableye it finds hunting a Carbink. The Legends: Arceus entry shows another side: a researcher says a normally violent Gabite grew docile when handed a glass bead it had been staring at.
Habitat
The Pokédex says its cave nests hold buried jewels, and Bulbapedia says it lives in mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it lives across Paldea, Area Zero and Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A it appears by evolving Gible, and in the Mega Dimension DLC it also lives in Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Its Abilities are Sand Veil and Rough Skin, which is hidden. Dragon Claw, Slash, Bulldoze, Dig and Dragon Rush are its heavier hits. With 90 Attack and 82 Speed it is a hard-hitting, quick middle stage.
Name origin
Gabite may combine gaburi, 'with a big bite', and 'bite'. The Japanese name, Gabite (ガバイト), is spelled the same as the English one.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Gabite appears to blend dinosaur-style kaiju, wyverns and sharks, along with theropods such as Carcharodontosaurus, a dinosaur whose teeth are often likened to a great white's. Its gem hoarding recalls European dragons guarding treasure. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Gabite evolves from Gible at level 24, and into Garchomp at level 48.
In the games
Gible evolves into Gabite in Diamond and Pearl, the games where the species debuted, and Platinum places wild ones on Victory Road.
In the anime
Ursula's Gabite debuted in 'Another One Gabites the Dust!' and is her main Pokémon, used in several Contest Battles. In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon episode, a Gabite tired of people wanting its scales offered one only in exchange for a battle.
