Lore
Biology
Chingling is a yellow, spherical baby Pokémon, 0.2 m tall and 0.6 kg, shaped like a jingle bell, with stubby limbs, beady black eyes and a red-and-white striped rope on top that looks like a scarf. Inside its mouth sits a red orb that it vibrates to make its cries.
Behaviour
Chingling hops everywhere instead of walking, bouncing along gently. It deafens foes with high-frequency cries and, according to HeartGold and SoulSilver, can keep crying for an awfully long time.
Habitat
No Pokédex entry names a habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Kitakami from The Teal Mask onwards, and in Legends: Z-A it comes by trade or in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Its Ability is Levitate. It uses Confusion, Astonish, Yawn and Last Resort, then learns Entrainment at level 19 and Uproar at level 32. With base stats totalling 285 and only 65 Special Attack, it is a fragile baby that mostly exists to grow into Chimecho.
Name origin
Chingling may combine 'chime', 'jingling' and the small-thing suffix -ling. The Japanese name is Lisyan (リーシャン), which may blend rin (bell), rinrin and shanshan (bell sounds), or perhaps 'listen'.
Design inspiration
Chingling appears to be based on a suzu, the kind of bell used at Shinto shrines. Its piercing, long-lasting cries may be a nod to a crying toddler. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Chingling is the baby form of Chimecho and evolves when levelled up with high friendship at night.
In the games
Chingling roams the Coronet Highlands and Alabaster Icelands in Legends: Arceus, having first appeared in Diamond and Pearl as the baby form of Chimecho. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 1-star and 3-star Tera Raid Battles.
In the anime
Chingling debuted in the film The Rise of Darkrai. Francesca's three Chingling made their series debut in 'The Bells Are Singing!', where Team Rocket captured them and James grew fond of them because they reminded him of his Chimecho.
