Lore
Biology
Corphish is a red-shelled crayfish, 0.6 m tall and 11.5 kg, with a short lobster-like tail, saucer-like eyes and three spikes on its head. It has two large pincers for gripping and three pairs of legs for walking. The Pokédex says its grip never loosens once its pincers have closed on prey.
Behaviour
Corphish is tough, adaptable and determined. The Pokédex says it can cope with the filthiest river water, where other Water Pokémon are no rivals for its food, so its numbers keep growing. Released ones have become common in Alola.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists the water's edge, and the Ultra Moon entry says almost no Pokémon besides Feebas and Corphish can live in stagnant ditches. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in The Teal Mask, around Kitakami; elsewhere it arrives by trade or transfer.
Diet
The Pokédex says it has no likes or dislikes in food and will eat anything.
Powers
Hyper Cutter stops other Pokémon lowering its Attack, Shell Armor blocks critical hits, and hidden Adaptability raises its same-type attack bonus from 1.5 to 2 times. It fights with Bubble Beam, Knock Off, Double Hit and Crabhammer. Its 80 base Attack is good for a first stage, but its Speed is only 35.
Name origin
Corphish may combine 'corps' or 'corporal' with 'crayfish'. The Japanese name is Heigani (ヘイガニ), which may blend 兵 (hei, soldier), 弊害 (heigai, harmful effect) and a word for crayfish.
Design inspiration
Its Ruby Pokédex entry about imported pets suggests the red swamp crayfish as a model, since that species is an invasive pest in many countries too. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Evolves into Crawdaunt at level 30.
In the games
In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, a Corphish lives in Wigglytuff's Guild. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, and in The Teal Mask it appears in 2 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Ash hooked a Corphish on his fishing line in its debut, 'Which Wurmple's Which?', and caught his own in 'Gone Corphishin''; it became the main comic relief of his Hoenn team.
