Lore

Biology

Corsola is a small, round, pink Pokémon with branch-like coral growths on its back, a blunt horn on its forehead and a smiling mouth. It is 0.6 m (2 ft) tall and weighs 5 kg (11.0 lb). The Ruby Pokédex says its branches glitter in seven colours in sunlight, and Bulbapedia says its horn is prized for jewellery and carving.

Behaviour

Corsola gathers in large groups, and Small Pokémon such as Horsea and Luvdisc shelter among its branches, Bulbapedia says. In Alola, where Mareanie hunt it for its branches, the Moon Pokédex says it may snap them off itself as a decoy while it escapes.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in warm southern seas and needs clean water, since polluted water makes its coral lose colour and crumble. It is listed as a Sea Pokémon, and it is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Natural Cure heals status problems when it switches out, Hustle boosts its physical attacks, and Regenerator is hidden. Its base Defense and Special Defense are both 95, and in Sword and Shield it learns Recover and Mirror Coat. Galarian Corsola is a pure Ghost type: a bleached, frowning coral whose wavy, translucent branches can vanish at will, and the Shield Pokédex says it absorbs others' life force through them. It has Weak Armor, with Cursed Body hidden, and curses anyone who kicks it by mistake.

Name origin

Corsola may combine 'coral' with 'sole' or 'solar', and Bulbapedia notes it might also echo the name Ursula. The Japanese name is Sunnygo (サニーゴ), from 'sunny' and sango (珊瑚, 'coral').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Corsola as the skeleton of stony coral, whose mineral make-up may explain its Rock type, and possibly precious coral used in jewellery. Galarian Corsola appears to be bleached coral, which loses its colour under heat stress. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Corsola does not evolve, but its Galarian form evolves into Cursola at level 38.

In the games

Sword and Shield gave Corsola a Galarian form, wild in Shield's Giant's Mirror while Sword players must trade for it. The original is caught by fishing in Gold and Silver, where it debuted.

In the anime

Professor Elm's Corsola debuted in 'Around the Whirlpool', and the sight of it inspired Misty to catch her own. Goh caught a Galarian Corsola in 'The Winding Path to Greatness!'.

Fun facts

  • The Pokédex cannot agree on regrowth time: Ruby says a broken branch grows back in one night, while Sun says about three days.
  • Bulbapedia says Corsola is Generation II's only species in the Water 3 Egg Group.
  • Bulbapedia compares it with Farfetch'd: neither original form evolves, but each has a mono-typed Galarian form that evolves once.
