Piloswine official artwork

Piloswine is a Ice/Ground-type Pokémon, the Swine Pokémon, number 221 (#0221) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 55.8 kg.

Piloswine is so shaggy that its long hair hides its eyes, so, the Pokédex says, it simply keeps charging and checks its surroundings by smell. Its tusks of ice grow thicker when it snows.

Lore

Biology

Piloswine is a big, furry brown boar with a hump on its back, floppy ears and two tusks made of ice, which Bulbapedia says are smaller on females. Fur covers its beady eyes and short, hooved legs. It is 1.1 m (3 ft 7 in) tall and weighs 55.8 kg (123.0 lb). The Pokédex says its rugged hooves stop it slipping on ice.

Behaviour

Piloswine is very sensitive to sound, and when it charges the hair along its back bristles upright. Bulbapedia says it relies on its nose instead of sight and often digs through snow and ice with its tusks.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a cave Pokémon, and Bulbapedia says it lives in mountains and frozen tundra. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami's Chilling Waterhead, in The Teal Mask expansion, and in 4-star Tera Raid Battles; it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Black 2 and White 2 Pokédex says its nose can find mushrooms buried under frozen ground.

Powers

Its Abilities are Oblivious, Snow Cloak and the hidden Thick Fat. It learns Ice Fang on evolving, then Earthquake, Blizzard and the rampaging Thrash. With 100 base HP and 100 base Attack it can both hit and take hits, and its base stat total of 450 is the highest of any Ice type introduced in Generation II.

Name origin

Piloswine may combine 'pilose' (covered in fine hair) with 'swine', and perhaps a pun on 'pile of swine'. The Japanese name is Inomoo (イノムー), which may blend inoshishi (猪, 'boar') with būbū, the oinking sound.

Design inspiration

Shigeki Morimoto designed Piloswine. It seems to be a wild boar with the traits of a woolly mammoth. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Piloswine evolves from Swinub at level 33 and into Mamoswine when it levels up while knowing Ancient Power. Its Scarlet and Violet learnset lists Ancient Power at level 1.

In the games

The Mahogany Gym Leader Pryce uses a Piloswine in Gold and Silver, where it debuted, and he still does in HeartGold and SoulSilver's Gym battle. In Legends: Arceus, its Pokédex entry says its white tusks can defeat enemies.

In the anime

In the TV series, Pryce's Piloswine debuted in 'As Cold as Pryce', where he believed it had abandoned him years earlier, which had made him cold and bitter.

Pokédex entries

The long fur of this Pokémon covers its eyes, ears, and even limbs, allowing Piloswine to resist harshly frigid conditions. The Pokémon's white tusks can be used to defeat its enemies. (Legends: Arceus)

Although its legs are short, its rugged hooves prevent it from slipping, even on icy ground. (Crystal, X, Shield)

If it charges at an enemy, the hairs on its back stand up straight. It is very sensitive to sound. (Silver, FireRed, SoulSilver, Sword)

Piloswine is covered by a thick coat of long hair that enables it to endure the freezing cold. This Pokémon uses its tusks to dig up food that has been buried under ice. (Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)

Because the long hair all over its body obscures its sight, it just keeps charging repeatedly. (Gold, LeafGreen, HeartGold, Y)

With its excellent sense of smell, it's even able to find mushrooms that are buried under frozen ground. (Black 2, White 2)
