Lore
Biology
Mamoswine is a large, woolly-mammoth-like boar with thick brown fur, a blue mask with a white rim around its eyes that looks like ski goggles, and two tusks of solid ice. Bulbapedia says the tusks are smaller on females. It is 2.5 m tall and weighs 291 kg.
Behaviour
Mamoswine can endure cold and hunger for a very long time, as the revived 10,000-year-old specimen shows. Bulbapedia says Weavile is its natural predator.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat; Bulbapedia says it lives in cold places such as mountains and frozen tundra. In The Teal Mask you evolve Piloswine or meet it in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Oblivious, Snow Cloak and the hidden Thick Fat. It learns Double Hit on evolving, then Ice Fang, Earthquake, Blizzard and Thrash. Its base Attack of 130 and HP of 110 make it a hard-hitting bruiser.
Name origin
Mamoswine joins 'mammoth' and 'swine'. The Japanese name is Mammoo (マンムー), which blends 'mammoth' with būbū, the sound of oinking.
Design inspiration
Mamoswine appears to combine a woolly mammoth with a wild boar, which Bulbapedia says echoes the mangalica, a woolly-coated pig breed. Its eye mask resembles ski goggles. Bulbapedia also notes that 'mammoth' may trace back to Mansi words for 'earth' and 'horn', which could explain its Ground type. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Piloswine becomes Mamoswine by levelling up while it knows Ancient Power, and the Swinub line ends there.
In the games
In X and Y, the player can ride a rented Mamoswine through the deep snow of Route 17, known as Mamoswine Road, to reach Dendemille Town or Anistar City. Pryce, the Mahogany Gym Leader, uses one in HeartGold and SoulSilver rematches and always leads with it in Black 2 and White 2's World Tournament. Mamoswine debuted in Diamond and Pearl.
In the anime
Dawn's Piloswine evolved into Mamoswine in 'A Breed Stampede!', and for a while it would not listen to her until it understood how deeply she cared in 'Trials and Adulations!'. A herd of Mamoswine also helps Regigigas stop a sliding glacier in the film Giratina and the Sky Warrior.
Fun facts
- Because Piloswine could already learn Ancient Power in Generations II and III, Mamoswine could have existed then; Bulbapedia says Lickilicky shares this trait.
- Bulbapedia notes that several of its Pokédex entries, including Diamond, Pearl and Black 2, refer to how real woolly mammoths became extinct as the ice age ended.
- In Pokémon UNITE it starts as Swinub and evolves at level 5 and then level 9, Bulbapedia says.

It looks strong, and that's exactly what it is. As the weather grows colder, its ice tusks grow longer, thicker, and more impressive. (Shield)
This Pokémon can be spotted in wall paintings from as far back as 10,000 years ago. For a while, it was thought to have gone extinct. (Sword)

A frozen Mamoswine was dug from ice dating back 10,000 years. This Pokémon has been around a long, long, long time. (HeartGold, X, Omega Ruby)
When the temperature rose at the end of the ice age, most Mamoswine disappeared. (Black 2, White 2)
