Lore

Biology

Gliscor is a large blue-purple bat with an insect-like carapace, 2.0 m tall and 42.5 kg. Its red, striped arms end in pincers and are detached from its black wings, and its two-barbed tail resembles vampire fangs. Bulbapedia says its body resembles an open mouth.

Behaviour

Gliscor is nocturnal and sleeps hanging upside down; the Pokédex says it watches prey from inverted branches before swooping. Its flight is soundless, and Bulbapedia says it rides winds and updrafts, climbing a tall tree to glide off when the air is still. It is highly resistant to poison.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it is extremely rare, with sightings in dense pine woods, swamps and alpine regions. In The Teal Mask, Scarlet players evolve Gligar or meet it in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids, while Violet players must trade for it.

Diet

Bulbapedia says Gliscor drinks the blood of other Pokémon, and a Legends: Arceus Pokédex entry says it looks satisfied once its prey is fully drained.

Powers

Its Abilities are Hyper Cutter and Sand Veil, with Poison Heal hidden, which turns poison into healing. It starts with Poison Jab and the Fire, Ice and Thunder Fangs, and later learns Acrobatics, Night Slash, X-Scissor and Swords Dance. With base Defense 125 and Speed 95 it is a tough and speedy attacker.

Name origin

Gliscor may combine 'glide' and 'scorpion'. The Japanese name is Glion (グライオン), which Bulbapedia explains the same way.

Design inspiration

Gliscor appears to mix scorpion and vampire, both of which share traits with bats. Its poison resistance may refer to how bats' immune systems let them carry diseases without falling ill. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Gligar evolves into it by levelling up at night while holding a Razor Fang.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus it lives in the Coronet Highlands, near the Primeval Grotto. Gliscor debuted in Diamond and Pearl, where it can only be had by evolving Gligar, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Paul's Gliscor debuted in 'Riding the Winds of Change!'. Ash's Gligar later evolved into a Gliscor in 'Fighting Fear With Fear!', holding Gary's Razor Fang as it saved Ash from a fall into a canyon.

Fun facts

  • It is lighter than the Gligar it evolves from, even though it is almost twice as tall.
  • By poke.si's data it is the tallest Flying type, and has the highest base Defense of any Flying type, among Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.
  • In the anime, Elite Four member Bertha's Gliscor destroys the machine attached to Team Rocket's balloon in 'An Elite Coverup!'.

Its flight is soundless. It uses its lengthy tail to carry off its prey... Then its elongated fangs do the rest. (HeartGold, SoulSilver, Y, Alpha Sapphire)

It glides soundlessly on pitch-black wings and sinks sharp fangs into the throat of its prey. It takes on a look of satisfaction once it has entirely drained its prey of blood. (Legends: Arceus)

It observes prey while hanging inverted from branches. When the chance presents itself, it swoops! (Diamond, Pearl, X, Omega Ruby)

It dances silently through the sky. When it approaches prey, it can land a critical hit in an instant. (Black 2, White 2)

If it succeeds in catching even a faint breeze properly, it can circle the globe without flapping once. (Platinum, Black, White)
