Lore
Biology
Gligar is a purple, bat-like Pokémon with scorpion features, 1.1 m (3'07") tall and 64.8 kg (142.9 lbs). It has long triangular ears, two big upper fangs, blue wing membranes, pincers on its arms and a long segmented tail ending in a round stinger, which Bulbapedia says is smaller on females.
Behaviour
Gligar glides with its limbs spread, and the Pokédex says it swoops straight for its target's face. Bulbapedia says it resists venom itself, and in the anime it uses sound waves to detect obstacles. The Crystal Pokédex says it hops back to its nest along the ground after gliding.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it lives in mountainous, boreal regions and nests on cliff sides. In The Teal Mask it is found across Kitakami, including Fellhorn Gorge and Oni Mountain.
Diet
Bulbapedia says Gligar eat Berries, as shown in the anime.
Powers
Its Abilities are Hyper Cutter and Sand Veil, with Immunity hidden. It attacks with Poison Sting, Poison Tail, Acrobatics and X-Scissor, and can raise its power with Swords Dance. With base Defense 105 and Speed 85 it is sturdy and quick.
Name origin
Gligar may combine 'glide' and 'gargoyle', and Bulbapedia says it might also nod to H. R. Giger, creator of the xenomorph alien. The Japanese name is Gliger (グライガー).
Design inspiration
Gligar shares traits with bats and scorpions, and with its Ground type it may also suggest a gargoyle. Its face-clamping may recall sci-fi face-huggers or the bat-like yōkai nobusuma. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
It evolves into Gliscor when levelled up while holding a Razor Fang at night. In Legends: Arceus, exposure to a Razor Fang at night is enough.
In the games
In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, a Gligar and his Team Rogue teammates try to rob Bidoof in a special episode, and the species first appeared in Gold and Silver. In Scarlet and Violet it is found only in Scarlet's Teal Mask, so Violet players must trade or transfer one in. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Gligar debuted in 'The Superhero Secret' as the sidekick of a hero named Gligarman, who passed it to his daughter when he retired. Ash caught one in 'Riding the Winds of Change!'.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia calls Gligar a parallel to Sneasel: both are Generation II dual types with the same base stat total, and both evolve at night while holding an item with 'razor' in its name.
- In Generation II, Gligar could not be taught Earthquake from a TM, yet beating the rival in Round 2 of Pokémon Stadium 2 rewarded you with one that knew it.
- Before HeartGold and SoulSilver, Gligar was sometimes drawn with white claws instead of purple.
