Lore

Biology

Dunsparce is 1.5 m (4'11") long and 14 kg (30.9 lbs), with a mostly yellow body, a blue belly and a back striped blue and cream. It has a round head, closed eyes, two tiny white wings and a drill-like tail. The wings let it float a little, and the Sword Pokédex says some scientists think they once let it fly.

Behaviour

Dunsparce is mostly motionless. The Pokédex says it bores a hole with its tail to flee from anyone who spots it. It digs maze-like nests and never gets lost in them, because it can tell where it is by the smell of the soil. The Ultra Sun Pokédex says it happily shares tunnels with Diglett.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it hides in dark places where no light reaches. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across much of Paldea, and in The Teal Mask it lives around Kitakami.

Powers

Its Abilities are Serene Grace and Run Away, with Rattled hidden. It learns Hyper Drill at level 32, which Bulbapedia says only Dunsparce and Dudunsparce can learn. Its base HP of 100 is its best stat, and its Speed is a slow 45.

Name origin

Dunsparce may combine 'dun' (a dull sandy brown, like its eyes and back) with 'sparse', perhaps for its rarity. The Japanese name is Nokocchi (ノコッチ), which may be an anagram of ツチノコ (tsuchinoko), a fabled snake-like creature.

Design inspiration

Hironobu Yoshida designed Dunsparce. It appears to be based on the tsuchinoko, a snake-like cryptid of Japan; the cryptid's other name bachi hebi ('bee snake') may explain the bee and snake mix. Blind snakes may also have inspired its closed eyes and barbed tail. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

It evolves into Dudunsparce when levelled up while knowing Hyper Drill. Bulbapedia says a hidden encryption constant sets the form: 99% Two-Segment, 1% Three-Segment.

In the games

Dunsparce is a supporting character throughout Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, and it first appeared in Gold and Silver. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Dunsparce debuted in 'The Dunsparce Deception', where Bucky was the only child in a town of Dunsparce owners without one, until he caught one.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that a Hardy Nature Dunsparce with Serene Grace transferred from Generation III or IV has a 50% chance of becoming Three-Segment Dudunsparce; other Natures, or Run Away, almost always give Two-Segment.
  • In the anime it is usually shown much shorter than its listed 1.5 m, and in Gates to Infinity and Super Mystery Dungeon it is smaller than Pikachu.
  • The tsuchinoko is said to like alcohol, so Bulbapedia suggests Dunsparce's rounded body may nod to sake bottles shaped like gourds.
