Lore

Biology

Dudunsparce looks like Dunsparce, with the same yellow body and stripes, but its eyes are partly open, its chin has three prongs and its first segment has a dark blue spiral underneath. It is 3.6 m long and 39.2 kg in Two-Segment Form, and 4.5 m and 47.4 kg in Three-Segment Form. A Violet Pokédex entry for the Three-Segment Form says genes decide how many segments it has, and each segment has its own wings and stripes.

Behaviour

The Scarlet Pokédex says Dudunsparce bores holes into bedrock with its hard tail to make a nest. The Violet Pokédex says it drives enemies out by filling its long, narrow lungs with air and releasing it in an intense blast. A second Scarlet entry, which Bulbapedia files under the Three-Segment Form, calls it gentle: it carries visitors that stray into its nest to the entrance on its back.

Habitat

The Pokédex places its nests deep underground, in bedrock. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Area Zero.

Powers

Its Abilities are Serene Grace and Run Away, with Rattled hidden. It keeps Hyper Drill from Dunsparce and adds Hurricane and Boomburst. The two forms differ in play only by size, and wild ones, Tera Raid ones included, are always Two-Segment Form. Base HP 125 and Attack 100 make it a bulky physical attacker.

Name origin

Dudunsparce may repeat part of 'Dunsparce' and echo 'redundant', since it looks like Dunsparce repeated; 'double' or 'dud' may also be in there. The Japanese name is Nokokocchi (ノココッチ), which repeats part of Nokocchi in the same way.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia sees the same tsuchinoko roots as Dunsparce. Its extra winged segments resemble the ultrabithorax mutation in fruit flies, which grows a second thorax with its own wings. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dunsparce evolves into it by levelling up while knowing Hyper Drill. Before Generation IX, Dunsparce had no evolution at all.

In the games

Dudunsparce is found in Area Zero in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. It also appears in 4-star Tera Raids, and The Teal Mask places it at Chilling Waterhead, Oni Mountain and Timeless Woods. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Larry's Two-Segment Form Dudunsparce debuted in 'Dance, Quaxly! The Blue Medali Step!', where it paralysed Dot's Quaxly with Glare in a Tera Training battle before being swapped out. A wild one also lives in Area Zero in 'Total-lie Awesome Pokémon in Area Zero?!', both in Pokémon Horizons.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says no Normal type is taller than Three-Segment Form Dudunsparce.
  • Its cry is Dunsparce's cry pitched down, with part of it repeated several times.
  • Stripes and wing feathers are counted per segment: two of each on the first segment of Two-Segment Form, one on the second, and three on the extra segment of Three-Segment Form.
