Cubchoo is a Ice-type Pokémon, the Chill Pokémon, number 613 (#0613) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 8.5 kg.

Cubchoo is the Chill Pokémon, a polar bear cub Ice type whose runny nose is also its weapon. It sniffs its frosty snot back up to use as raw material for its moves, and the Pokédex says healthy snot makes its Ice moves hit harder.

Lore

Biology

Cubchoo is a bipedal bear cub, 0.5 m tall and 8.5 kg, with a light blue head, large round ears, a darker blue muzzle and a shiny dark nose. Its lower body is white, with rounded forepaws and a small round tail. Light blue mucus constantly hangs from its nose, and the Pokédex treats it as a health gauge: thick and sticky when Cubchoo is well, watery when ill.

Behaviour

Cubchoo's sneezes are a warning. The Pokédex says a spatter of its frosty snot gives you frostbite, and the Sword entry adds that it smears the snot on anyone it dislikes.

Habitat

The Pokédex says many Cubchoo live along the shorelines of cold regions. In Scarlet and Violet they are found around Dalizapa Passage and Glaseado Mountain, and The Indigo Disk adds the Polar Biome.

Powers

Cubchoo's Abilities are Snow Cloak and Slush Rush, which sharpen its evasion and double its Speed in icy weather, with Rattled hidden. It fights with Powder Snow, Icy Wind and Frost Breath, and learns Blizzard and Sheer Cold later. Its base Attack of 70 beats its Special Attack of 60, but with only 40 in Defence, Special Defence and Speed it is fragile.

Name origin

Cubchoo combines 'cub' with 'ah-choo', the sound of a sneeze. The Japanese name is Kumasyun (クマシュン), from kuma ('bear') and kushun, a sneezing sound.

Design inspiration

Cubchoo takes after a polar bear cub, and its mucus likely comes from cold weather making noses run. Bulbapedia, citing Nintendo Dream, says a staff member had long wanted to use a freezing-snot idea, and Cubchoo is the result.

Evolution notes

Cubchoo evolves into Beartic at level 37.

In the games

Cubchoo first appeared in Black and White, where it lives on Twist Mountain. In Scarlet and Violet it can be caught in the wild and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A whole group of Cubchoo debuted in 'The Beartic Mountain Feud!', where Ash and his friends returned an injured one to its friends. In 'The Mystery of the Missing Cubchoo!', Chris's Cubchoo was eventually found with a wild Larvitar it had befriended.
