Lore

Biology

Beartic is a shaggy, bluish-white bear, 2.6 m tall and 260 kg, with large forepaws, black claws and a stumpy bump on its head. It walks on four legs but can stand on two. Ice covers its lower snout, and three icicles hang from its chin like a beard. The Pokédex says it freezes its breath into fangs and claws of ice, the fangs harder than steel.

Behaviour

Beartic is ferocious, though Bulbapedia notes it is protective around Cubchoo. When tired of swimming it freezes the water with its breath and rests on the ice.

Habitat

The Pokédex says Beartic loves the cold northern seas. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain, and The Indigo Disk adds the Polar Biome.

Diet

It hunts prey in cold northern waters, then freezes the catch with its breath to preserve it.

Powers

Beartic's Abilities are Snow Cloak and Slush Rush, with Swift Swim hidden, which fits a bear that swims. It learns Aqua Jet, Frost Breath, Blizzard, Sheer Cold and Superpower. With a base Attack of 130 and 95 HP it hits hard and takes a hit, though its Speed of 50 is poor.

Name origin

Beartic combines 'bear' and 'arctic', and may also nod to 'beard' because of its icy chin. The Japanese name is Tunbear (ツンベアー), possibly from tundra, tsurara ('icicle') and bear.

Design inspiration

Beartic looks like a polar bear, and its flat, conical head and icy beard may suggest a snow-capped mountain. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Beartic evolves from Cubchoo at level 37.

In the games

Beartic closes the team of Brycen, the Icirrus City Gym Leader in Black and White, which is also where it first appeared. In Scarlet and Violet it can be caught in the wild and in 4-star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Georgia's Beartic debuted in 'Iris and Excadrill Against the Dragon Buster!', beating Iris's Axew and Excadrill before tying a rematch with Excadrill. In 'Bearing Down Easy!', a Beartic whose ice breath froze everything around it learned to control it with Ash's help.

Fun facts

  • Brycen, the Gym Leader who owns one, is a retired film star, and in the anime he and his Beartic saved Ash and his friends from a falling boulder in 'Guarding the Guardian of the Mountain!'.
  • In Scarlet and Violet, Beartic gets Icicle Crash the moment it evolves, a move Cubchoo never learns by levelling up.
  • Beartic's base Attack was 110 before Generation VII, when it was raised to 130.
