Lore
Biology
Cryogonal is made of ice crystals and looks like a shiny blue hexagonal snowflake, 1.1 m tall and 148 kg. Two cracks run through its frozen, scowling face: the upper one holds its glowing eyes and the lower one is a mouth hiding an extendable chain of ice. It has no gender.
Behaviour
Cryogonal appears in cold seasons and is almost never seen in summer, because the Pokédex says it turns to water vapour as the weather warms. It binds prey with its icy chains, freezes it and carries it off to somewhere unknown. One entry repeats a tale of snowy-mountain deaths: that both people and Pokémon who die there return as Cryogonal.
Habitat
It is born in snow clouds. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain.
Powers
Its only Ability is Levitate, which lets it float above Ground moves. It uses Ice Shard, Aurora Beam, Freeze-Dry and Ice Beam, mends itself with Recover, and learns Solar Beam at level 56. Its base Special Defence of 135 is the highest of any Pokémon introduced in Generation V, and with Speed 105 it is quick and hard to hit with special moves.
Name origin
Cryogonal combines 'cry-' or 'cryo-' (icy cold) with 'hexagonal'. The Japanese name is Freegeo (フリージオ), possibly from 'freeze' or 'frigid' and 'geometry'.
Design inspiration
Cryogonal looks like a snowflake or ice crystal. Bulbapedia floats fan readings: its ice-chain hunting could nod to the hrímþursar, Nordic frost giants, and its light-based moves could recall the enchanted mirror in The Snow Queen.
In the games
Cryogonal is the signature Pokémon of Brycen, the Icirrus City Gym Leader in Black and White, whose team also includes Vanillish and Beartic. It first appeared in those games, where it lives on Twist Mountain. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles, and in Legends: Z-A it is found in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Brycen's Cryogonal debuted in 'Caution: Icy Battle Conditions!', defeating Ash's Scraggy but losing to his Pignite. In 'Team Eevee and the Pokémon Rescue Squad!', a group of Cryogonal freezing a dam were really searching for a baby trapped inside, and left peacefully once they were reunited.
