Lore

Biology

Darumaka is a round red Fire type, 0.6 m tall and 37.5 kg, with short limbs and an orange face under curling yellow brows. The Pokédex says it cannot settle while its inner flame is strong, and the flame sinks to 600°C (1,100°F) when it sleeps. Galarian Darumaka is a white Ice type, 0.7 m and 40 kg, with ice-crystal eyebrows and a blue face.

Behaviour

Asleep, Darumaka tucks in its limbs, and the Shield entry calls it a popular symbol of good fortune that never falls over, however hard it is pushed. The Sword entry says Galarian Darumaka spent so long in snowy country that its fire sac cooled and shrank into an organ that makes cold; the colder it gets, the more energetic it is, and the Pokédex says it freezes its breath into snowballs for playful fights.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Darumaka prefers desert, and its Galarian form comes from snowy Galar. Neither is available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Diet

Bulbapedia says Galarian Darumaka likes berries from Snover, so it preys on Snover, often until an Abomasnow drives it off.

Powers

Darumaka has Hustle, which boosts physical moves but lowers their accuracy, or hidden Inner Focus, which prevents flinching. Unovan Darumaka learns Fire Fang, Fire Punch and Flare Blitz; the Galarian form swaps them for Ice Fang, Ice Punch and Blizzard. Its 90 base Attack is high for a first stage.

Name origin

Darumaka seems to combine 'Daruma' and makka ('crimson'), or may be a corruption of 'macaque'. The Japanese name is Darumakka (ダルマッカ).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia names the Daruma doll as the basis, with the Fire type taken from the traditional Daruma burning ceremony. Galarian Darumaka may mix a snowman (yuki-daruma in Japanese) with a yeti, which is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Darumaka evolves into Darmanitan at level 35, but Galarian Darumaka needs an Ice Stone instead.

In the games

Darumaka first appeared in Black and White, on Route 4 and in the Desert Resort. Galarian Darumaka first appeared in Sword and Shield, on Routes 8 and 10 in Sword and in the Crown Tundra's Snowslide Slope.

In the anime

Two Darumaka debuted in 'Saving Darmanitan From the Bell!', stealing food for a Darmanitan stuck in Zen Mode. Dino's Darumaka lost to Ash's Palpitoad in the Club Battle semifinals. A Galarian Darumaka debuted in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!'.

Fun facts

  • Its base Special Attack of 15 is the lowest of any Fire-type Pokémon, according to Bulbapedia and the game data.
  • The Pokédex says its droppings are hot and that people once tucked them into their clothes to keep warm.
  • Its Black and White desert has constant sandstorms, and Bulbapedia says the anime's burrowing Darumaka may explain how they cope.
