Lore

Biology

Delibird is a red bird with a white face and chest, two three-pointed crests above its circular, black-ringed eyes, a pale yellow beak and feet, and one white spot on its belly. Its hollow white tail works like a bag. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 16 kg.

Behaviour

Delibird carries food all day and shares it with people and Pokémon who are lost or stranded. In a flock, the Ultra Moon Pokédex says, the boss is whichever Delibird has the biggest tail. If attacked, the Violet entry says, it hurls its food at the attacker.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a Mountain Pokémon, and the Sun entry says Delibird in Alola can withstand some heat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain in Paldea's North Province, and in Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zones 12 and 20, plus the Mega Dimension DLC's 3-star Ice-type wild zones in Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

It is omnivorous, according to the Ultra Sun Pokédex, which adds that it sometimes gives stranded people bug Pokémon to eat.

Powers

Vital Spirit and Hustle are its regular Abilities, with Insomnia hidden. In Scarlet and Violet it learns only two moves by levelling up: Present, a gift attack that Bulbapedia says may hurt or heal its target, and Drill Peck at level 25. Bulbapedia says that, by levelling up, only Delibird and its Paradox relative Iron Bundle can learn Present.

Name origin

Delibird combines 'delivery' and 'bird', and Bulbapedia notes that 'Deli' may also nod to the Adélie penguin. The Japanese name is the same, Delibird (デリバード).

Design inspiration

Delibird appears to draw on the rockhopper penguin. Its red and white colours, present-giving and sack-like tail may come from Santa Claus, and Bulbapedia also suggests the white stork. These are fan readings.

In the games

In Pokémon Channel, Delibird makes the deliveries for the 'Shop 'n Squirtle', and in Legends: Z-A it turns up as a wild Pokémon in Lumiose's wild zones. It first appeared in Gold and Silver.

In the anime

A Delibird tied to a Team Rocket talent scout debuted in 'Dues and Don'ts' and kept following Jessie and James to collect money they owed. Santa Claus's Delibird gets shot out of the sky by a snowball in 'Delibird's Dilemma'.

Fun facts

  • Its hidden Ability Insomnia does exactly the same thing in battle as its regular Ability Vital Spirit: both prevent sleep.
  • Bulbapedia says its Spaceworld '97 demo design, Gifuto, was a Water and Ice type with a crest like a Santa hat.
  • In Pokémon Stadium 2's mini-game 'Delibird's Delivery', players carry presents across the field while avoiding Swinub that trip the Delibird up.
