Lore
Biology
Mantine is a large manta-ray Pokémon, 2.1 m long and 220 kg, with a dark blue back, a pinkish grey underside and a coarse, rough skin. Its wide fins are wing-like and marked with black rings, and two long horn-like growths sit on its head. The Pokédex says that if it builds up enough speed it can fly more than 100 m (300 ft) out of the water.
Behaviour
Mantine is docile and usually travels in schools, which Bulbapedia says like to race each other. It ignores any Remoraid that clings to its fins to scavenge its leftovers, and Bulbapedia adds that the two fight together if attacked. In Alola, the Ultra Moon Pokédex says, many people took up surfing out of admiration for how gracefully it swims.
Habitat
The Pokédex places it in open seas. In Sword and Shield it is found on Route 9, in the Lake of Outrage and around the Wild Area lakes.
Diet
A Crystal Pokédex entry says it swims along eating whatever swims into its mouth.
Powers
Mantine's Abilities are Swift Swim and Water Absorb, with Water Veil hidden. It attacks with Wing Attack, Water Pulse and Bubble Beam, and the Dual Wingbeat tutor move is open to it in Sword and Shield. With 140 base Special Defense it is a very tough special wall, though its base Attack is only 40.
Name origin
Mantine may blend 'manta' with 'marine', 'brine' or 'tine'. The Japanese name is Mantain (マンタイン).
Design inspiration
Its leaping looks like a manta ray, and Bulbapedia names the Mobula genus, the 'flying rays'. With Remoraid based on a firearm, Mantine may also nod to a fighter plane, whose roundel insignia would match the rings on its body. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
It evolves from Mantyke when it levels up while a Remoraid is in your party.
In the games
Mantine first appeared in Gold and Silver. It returns in Legends: Arceus and Sword and Shield, but is unobtainable in both Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Mantine first appeared in 'Spell of the Unown: Entei', and its animated series debut was 'Mantine Overboard!'. In 'Where Are You Going, Eevee?' a Mantine rescues Eevee and later the two try Mantine Surfing together.
