Lore
Biology
Mantyke is a round, flat-finned Pokémon 1.0 m long and 65 kg. Its back is dark blue and its underside light blue, with two red spots and a curved light-blue line that read as a smiling face. Two long, curved antennae sense ocean currents. Despite its ball-like look, the Pokédex calls it a proficient swimmer.
Behaviour
Mantyke is friendly towards people and approaches boats, and the Pokédex says swimming tours with it are a hugely popular beach activity. It often swims alongside schools of Remoraid, and they fight together to drive off attackers. The Pokédex says spending enough time with Remoraid will eventually make it evolve. In Galar the colder water seems to make it sluggish.
Habitat
It lives near the sea surface, where passengers on ships can spot the pattern on its back.
Powers
Mantyke's Abilities are Swift Swim and Water Absorb, with Water Veil hidden. It learns Water Gun, Wing Attack, Water Pulse and Bubble Beam, and Hydro Pump at level 48 in Sword and Shield. Its base stats are low except for 120 Special Defense, and it is mostly a stepping stone to Mantine.
Name origin
Mantyke may combine 'manta' with 'tyke', a word for a small child. The Japanese name is Tamanta (タマンタ), from 'tama' (ball) and 'manta'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia reads Mantyke as a young manta ray, with the pattern on its back forming a smiley face.
Evolution notes
It becomes Mantine when levelled up with a Remoraid in your party, which Bulbapedia calls the only evolution needing one specific Pokémon in the party and likens to mutualism, where two species help each other. A Mantine holding a Wave Incense can also breed a Mantyke, in Generations IV to VIII.
In the games
Mantyke first appeared in Diamond and Pearl as a baby Pokémon. It swims around the Cobalt Coastlands in Legends: Arceus, but Bulbapedia's availability table lists it as unobtainable in both Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Goh caught a Mantyke in 'The Sinnoh Iceberg Race!' soon after arriving in Snowpoint City, and it helped Pikachu in the Pokémon Iceberg Race. The species made its series debut in 'Following A Maiden's Voyage!'.
