Lore

Biology

Deoxys is a humanoid alien, 1.7 m tall and 60.8 kg, with reddish-orange skin, a black underbody and a purple crystal on its chest that the Pokédex says appears to be its brain. In Normal Forme its arms can coil into a double helix. The Pokédex calls it highly intelligent, with psychokinetic powers and lasers fired from that crystal. Bulbapedia says it becomes a triangular stone tablet when inactive.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Deoxys appears where auroras are seen, and in LeafGreen it says an aurora forms whenever the Pokémon changes shape. Bulbapedia says it mostly stays in Normal Forme unless danger is near, switching Formes to suit the situation; the FireRed entry describes its Attack Forme as an aggressive guise. It has a long rivalry with Rayquaza, Bulbapedia says.

Habitat

Deoxys is a visitor from space, and the game data files its habitat as Rare. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives from Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Deoxys has the Ability Pressure and a signature move, Psycho Boost, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn by levelling up. Its Formes shuffle the same 600 stat points. Normal has 150 Attack, Special Attack and Speed. Attack Forme has 180 Attack and Special Attack but only 20 in each defence. Defense Forme has 160 Defense and Special Defense. Speed Forme has 180 Speed.

Name origin

Deoxys comes from deoxyribonucleic acid, better known as DNA. The Japanese name is Deoxys (デオキシス), a katakana spelling of the same word.

Design inspiration

Deoxys appears to draw on depictions of aliens and on the double helix of DNA. Bulbapedia also notes that its shape resembles a chromosome, and that its meteor-borne origin may nod to panspermia, the idea that life reached Earth from space. These are fan readings.

In the games

Deoxys is a Mythical Pokémon that debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, where it could only be obtained through events. In Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team an amnesiac Deoxys fights you in a cave formed from meteorite shards that Rayquaza destroyed, and it also has a role in the Delta Episode of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Scarlet and Violet receive it through Pokémon HOME or events.

In the anime

Deoxys debuted in the film Destiny Deoxys, where two fell to Earth in a meteorite and one, with a green crystal, was taken to LaRousse City. Its Speed Forme first appeared in the episode 'Pokémon Ranger - Deoxys' Crisis! (Part 1)'.

Fun facts

  • In Generation III its Forme depended on the game: Normal in Ruby and Sapphire, Attack in FireRed, Defense in LeafGreen and Speed in Emerald, and only trading it to another game changed it.
  • Take the first letters of Defense, Normal and Attack and you spell DNA, as Bulbapedia points out.
  • According to Bulbapedia, no other Pokémon has a Japanese category name written with foreign letters: Deoxys is DNAポケモン.
  • Deoxys was the first Pokémon given a battle theme of its very own, Bulbapedia says.
  • In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Deoxys became the first Mythical Pokémon you could catch in a core game without an event, which led some media to mislabel it Legendary; it is still Mythical.
