Lore
Biology
Dewott is an upright, light blue otter, 0.8 m tall and 24.5 kg, with a pointed crest on the back of its head, long white whiskers in tilted V shapes and a flat black tail. A fringe of dark blue fur circles its waist, and a scalchop is fixed to each thigh. The scalchops come off, and Dewott keeps each one carefully maintained.
Behaviour
Dewott is strict with itself and studious. It masters its scalchops through repeated training, and every Dewott develops its own forms, so no two fight quite alike. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex says its double-scalchop technique can make even sword masters turn and flee.
Habitat
The Pokédex names no wild habitat. In The Indigo Disk you get Dewott by evolving Oshawott, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Torrent and the hidden Shell Armor. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Razor Shell at level 18, Fury Cutter at 21, Aerial Ace at 29 and Retaliate at 45. With base Special Attack of 83, it already leans towards special moves such as Hydro Pump.
Name origin
Dewott may blend 'dew', 'water' and 'otter', and could also hint at 'duel', 'dual' (for its two scalchops) or 'duo'. The Japanese name is Futachimaru (フタチマル), which may combine futatsu (two things), tachi (a kind of sword) and maru, a common ending for boys' names.
Design inspiration
Dewott appears to be a young samurai sea otter. Its two-shell fighting style may be based on tessenjutsu, a martial art that uses the Japanese war fan.
Evolution notes
Dewott evolves from Oshawott at level 17 and into Samurott at level 36. If it levels up in Hisui, it becomes Hisuian Samurott, which picks up an extra Dark type.
In the games
Dewott is the middle stage of Unova's Water starter line in Black and White. In Legends: Arceus wild Dewott appear in the Alabaster Icelands, the same area where Hisuian Samurott is found.
In the anime
A Dewott debuted in 'The Battle Club and Tepig's Choice!', where it beat a Servine before challenging Ash. In 'The Pokémon Harbor Patrol!', Halsey's Dewott helped put out fires, but its proud nature kept clashing with Halsey's Watchog.
Fun facts
- Dewott first appeared in concept art for the Black and White anime, alongside Servine, Woobat and Axew, and its English name was confirmed by the anime rather than a game.
- Bulbapedia notes in its name-origin section that Helen DeWitt wrote the novel The Last Samurai, a name very close to Dewott.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Blake's Dewott is his main Pokémon and beats Hugh's Trapinch to earn him a Pokédex.
