Lore
Biology
Dialga is a sauropod-like Pokémon, dark blue with grey metal plating and light-blue stripes. A diamond-like crystal sits in the middle of its chest plate, and a gear-like fin rises from its back. It is 5.4 m tall and weighs 683 kg. Bulbapedia says it lives mostly in a dimension of its own, which makes its behaviour almost impossible to study.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says Dialga controls the flow of time and can travel to the past and future at will. In Sinnoh myth it is an ancient deity. Bulbapedia adds that in the anime it fiercely protects its home dimension and clashes with Palkia whenever their dimensions overlap.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat; Bulbapedia places it in a dimension of its own, where time is said to run in shifting directions and speeds. In Diamond, Platinum and Brilliant Diamond it waits at Spear Pillar, and in Legends: Arceus at the Temple of Sinnoh.
Powers
No other Pokémon is known to learn Roar of Time, a Dragon move that blasts with power that distorts time, and Dialga also learns Flash Cannon, Dragon Claw, Aura Sphere and Earth Power. Its Ability is Pressure, with Telepathy hidden. Holding the Adamant Crystal turns it into Origin Forme, which Bulbapedia describes as its true form: 7 m tall, with Attack 100 and Special Defense 120 instead of 120 and 100. With base Special Attack 150 it is a powerful special attacker.
Name origin
Dialga may come from 'diamond', and could also involve the Spanish día ('day') or the dial of a clock or sundial. The Japanese name is Diaruga (ディアルガ).
Design inspiration
Ken Sugimori designed Dialga and Palkia together. Dialga looks like a short-necked sauropod dinosaur, perhaps Camarasaurus, and its diamond-tipped stripes vaguely recall clock hands. Bulbapedia also suggests the pair may echo the Shinto myth of Izanagi and Izanami raising the first island with a spear. These are fan readings, not official statements.
In the games
Dialga is the box mascot of Diamond and returned in Brilliant Diamond. It is a boss in Legends: Arceus and the main antagonist of Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only by transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Its physical debut came in the film 'The Rise of Darkrai', where it fights Palkia and Darkrai above Alamos Town. In the episode 'The Battle Finale of Legend!', Cyrus uses a Red Chain to control it and Palkia on Spear Pillar, and they rampage once the chain is destroyed.
