Lore
Biology
Azelf is a small, grey, fairy-like Pokémon, 0.3 m tall and 0.3 kg, with a pale blue face and a cone-shaped head whose forehead flares out at the sides like a star. It has two leaf-tipped tails with red jewels, another red jewel on its forehead and yellow-irised, almond-shaped eyes. Bulbapedia says its spirit can leave its body and return at will.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says Azelf rests on a lake floor and so helps keep the world in balance. Bulbapedia calls it cautious around people and Pokémon, but bold if it is threatened. Legends say that harming Azelf can leave humans without any will, immobile for ever.
Habitat
Bulbapedia places it in the Valor Cavern at the centre of Lake Valor. In the games the cavern is where it waits in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, and in the Crimson Mirelands in Legends: Arceus.
Powers
Azelf's Ability is Levitate. It learns Psychic, Extrasensory, Future Sight and Nasty Plot. Bulbapedia says it can control a person's will or even enter their body. With base Attack and Special Attack of 125 and Speed of 115, but only 70 in each defence, it is a fast, fragile attacker.
Name origin
Azelf may combine the A of 'UMA' (a Japanese term for cryptids, short for unidentified mysterious animal) with 'elf', and may also involve 'azure'. The Japanese name is Agnome (アグノム), which instead suggests a gnome.
Design inspiration
Azelf looks like a pixie or fairy, though its Japanese name points to a gnome. Bulbapedia suggests the lake guardians may come from Japan's Three Sacred Treasures, with Azelf matching the sword Kusanagi, a symbol of valour. It may also nod to the Thrones, angels known as the valiant ones. These are fan readings, not official statements.
In the games
Azelf is one of the three lake guardians of Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness it guards a Time Gear at Crystal Crossing. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only by transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Ash sees Azelf's projected soul in 'Pruning a Passel of Pals!'. Azelf debuted physically in 'The Needs of the Three!', where it is the first of the trio that J and Team Galactic capture.
