Lore

Biology

Mesprit is a small, grey, fairy-like Pokémon, 0.3 m tall and 0.3 kg, with a magenta face and four long, drooping magenta appendages. Two tails each end in a leaf shape with a red jewel, and a third red gem sits on its forehead. Its half-lidded eyes have yellow irises. Its spirit is said to slip out and skim across the lake, and Bulbapedia says it can return to its body at will.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia calls Mesprit playful but a little mischievous, and says legends warn that touching it drains a person's emotions away. The Pokédex says it slumbers on a lakebed.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in the Verity Cavern at the centre of Lake Verity. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum it leaves the cavern and roams Sinnoh once you meet it, while in Legends: Arceus it waits in the Verity Cavern in the Obsidian Fieldlands.

Powers

Mesprit's Ability is Levitate. It learns Psychic, Extrasensory, Future Sight, Charm, Flatter and Healing Wish, and it is one of only three Pokémon, the lake guardians, that can learn Mystical Power. Bulbapedia says it can teleport itself and others. Its stats are an even 105 in Attack, Defense, Special Attack and Special Defense, making it a well-rounded mixed attacker.

Name origin

Mesprit may combine the M of 'UMA' (a Japanese term for cryptids, short for unidentified mysterious animal) with 'spirit' or 'sprite', and may also involve the French esprit ('spirit'). The Japanese name is Emrit (エムリット).

Design inspiration

Mesprit looks like a spirit or sprite. Bulbapedia suggests the lake guardians may come from Japan's Three Sacred Treasures, with Mesprit matching the jewel Yasakani no Magatama, a symbol of benevolence. It may also nod to the Seraphim, angels associated with burning love. These are fan readings, not official statements.

In the games

Mesprit is one of the three lake guardians of Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness it guards a Time Gear in Quicksand Cave. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only by transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Dawn first sees Mesprit's projected soul near Lake Verity in 'Following A Maiden Voyage!'. It debuted physically in 'The Needs of the Three!', arriving at Lake Valor with Uxie before J and Team Galactic capture them.
