Lore
Biology
Doduo is a bipedal bird with a long neck and a sharp-beaked head on each side, bristly brown feathers and tiny wings. Males have black necks and females brown ones. It stands 1.4 m tall and weighs 39.2 kg. The Pokédex says both heads share the same genes and, normally, identical brains, though rare Doduo may have different ones, and the heads seem to swap feelings by telepathy. FireRed's entry says the second head came from a sudden mutation.
Behaviour
Doduo's heads work as a team and battle in perfect sync; even while it eats, one head stays alert for danger. When trouble comes it runs rather than flies, raising and lowering its heads to keep its balance, and its strides leave footprints up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat list puts Doduo in grasslands, and Bulbapedia describes wide open plains and savannahs. In Scarlet and Violet it is not found wild in Paldea or Kitakami, but The Indigo Disk's Savanna Biome has it.
Powers
Its Abilities are Run Away and Early Bird, with Tangled Feet hidden. Doduo pecks with Peck, Pluck and Drill Peck, jabs with Fury Attack, speeds up with Agility and builds power with Swords Dance. With 85 base Attack but only 35 base HP it hits harder than its size suggests and breaks easily.
Name origin
Doduo may combine 'dodo', the extinct flightless bird, with 'duo', a pair. The Japanese name is Dodo (ドードー), which is simply the word for the dodo.
Design inspiration
Despite its name, Bulbapedia says Doduo looks more like an ostrich than a dodo, with hints of the moa, emu and kiwi, all flightless birds. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Doduo evolves into Dodrio at level 31, and neither has a regional form or a branching path.
In the games
Doduo first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), where it is wild on Routes 16 to 18, and in Pokémon Stadium it is shown running through the air. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Gary's Doduo debuted in 'Showdown at the Po-ké Corral' and was later shown to have become a Dodrio in 'Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl!'. In 'Bad To The Bone', Otoshi's Doduo is no help in battle because its two heads start attacking each other.
Fun facts

- In the Red and Green beta, its English name was Dodo, which is also its Japanese name.
- Bulbapedia says a Japanese Pokémon encyclopedia claims Doduo was discovered only three years before Red and Green came out.
