Lore
Biology
Donphan is a grey elephant, 1.1 m tall and 120 kg, with a heavy black band of hide running down its back and along its trunk, which looks like a car tyre when it curls up. White tusks grow from the corners of its mouth and are smaller on females. Each of its short legs wears a broken black band.
Behaviour
Donphan travels in herds, and the Pokédex says the bigger and longer its tusks, the higher its rank. Normally calm, it can rampage if angered. Bulbapedia says males hold rolling contests to show their toughness to females, as in the anime episode 'Date Expectations'. The Sapphire Pokédex says it helps clear rock and mud slides from mountain trails.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it lives in mountainous, rough terrain. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Asado Desert, South Province Area Six and West Province Area Two, and it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Donphan has Sturdy, with Sand Veil hidden, and rolls with Rollout and Rapid Spin before using Earthquake and Knock Off. With base stats of 120 Attack and 120 Defense it is a durable physical attacker. The Pokédex says an ordinary Donphan can haul a dump truck.
Name origin
Donphan may combine 'don', a Spanish honorific, or '-don', a suffix in names of prehistoric animals, with 'elephant'. The Japanese name is Donfan (ドンファン), which Bulbapedia gives the same possible origins.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Donphan seems based on an adult elephant, perhaps a pygmy or extinct dwarf one, and its tough hide and category may hint at an armoured war elephant. The ridged back resembles tyre treads on heavy vehicles. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Donphan evolves from Phanpy at level 25.
In the games
Donphan first appeared in Gold and Silver. Bulbapedia sees a likeness to Donphan in Scarlet and Violet's Great Tusk and Iron Treads, a pair of Paradox Pokémon.
In the anime
Raymond's Donphan appeared in 'Mewtwo Strikes Back', landing two Rollouts on Ash's Bulbasaur before losing. Ash's Phanpy evolved into Donphan in 'Reversing the Charges' and became a strong team member.
