Lore
Biology
Porygon2 is a rounded magenta Pokémon with a flat bill, large round eyes, simple oval legs along its sides and a tail that widens in the middle. The bill, legs, tail and underside are all blue. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 32.5 kg.
Behaviour
Porygon2 learns new gestures and emotions by itself, so it sometimes does things that were never in its programming. The Pokédex says it was upgraded to work on other planets, but it moves poorly in zero gravity and cannot even fly. Bulbapedia says it is generally found in computers and labs.
Habitat
Urban, according to the Pokédex habitat list. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by transfer or trade, or by evolving Porygon in The Indigo Disk; in Legends: Z-A it is a Mega Dimension DLC Pokémon, found in Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Trace copies an opponent's Ability and Download raises the stat that suits the foe's weaker defence, with Analytic hidden. It uses Conversion 2 to change its type, and learns Psybeam, Recover, Tri Attack, Zap Cannon and, at level 60, Hyper Beam. With 90 base Defense and 105 base Special Attack it is a tough special attacker.
Name origin
Porygon2 adds the numeral 2 to Porygon, as the second stage and an upgraded 'version 2'. The Japanese name is the same, Porygon2 (ポリゴン2), with a full-width 2.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia sees the same rendered bird shape as Porygon, now rounder, which may represent smoothing in 3D graphics, with the '2' hinting at a software version number. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Porygon evolves into Porygon2 by trading while holding an Upgrade, and Porygon2 evolves into Porygon-Z by trading while holding a Dubious Disc.
In the games
Porygon2 first appeared in Gold and Silver. In Legends: Arceus its Pokédex entry says a bizarre item caused it to evolve, and one appears in the Crimson Mirelands distortions. It is a Mega Dimension DLC Pokémon in Legends: Z-A, found in 5-star Hyperspace Lumiose wild zones.
In the anime
Porygon2 has never appeared in an episode of the anime, which Bulbapedia ties to the banned Porygon episode. It shows up only as stock art in the English dub's Johto Pokérap and in the opening of the film Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice.
