Lore
Biology
Stantler is a tan deer, 1.4 m tall and 71.2 kg, with a cream belly, a round tail, black hooves and a big brown nose. Its pale curved antlers each hold a black orb, so they look like a pair of eyes. The Pokédex says the antlers gently alter how air moves and so bend reality, and that the orbs can be crushed into a sleep-aiding powder; Bulbapedia adds that they smell pleasant.
Behaviour
Stantler lives in herds, which Bulbapedia says are sometimes led by a Wyrdeer. Staring at its antlers, the Pokédex says, makes people lose control of their senses until they cannot stand. In the anime, a frightened fawn separated from its herd instinctively creates an illusion of a stampeding herd to scare off threats.
Habitat
Bulbapedia places Stantler in temperate, mountainous forests. In Scarlet and Violet it roams South Province Areas One, Three and Five and appears across Kitakami, and it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Stantler has Intimidate or Frisk, with Sap Sipper hidden. It puts foes to sleep with Hypnosis, confuses them with Confuse Ray, sets up with Calm Mind and strikes with Zen Headbutt and Double-Edge. Its Attack of 95 and Special Attack of 85 make it a flexible mixed attacker.
Name origin
Stantler may combine 'startle', 'stare' or 'stag' with 'antler'. The Japanese name is Odoshishi (オドシシ), which may come from shishi-odoshi, a Japanese device traditionally used to scare deer away.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Stantler seems to be a deer, with the sika deer and the reindeer the closest matches. It suggests its eye-like antlers may also nod to scare-eye balloons used to frighten birds, and that the orbs' sleep-aid use may echo velvet antler in traditional Chinese medicine. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
In Legends: Arceus, Stantler evolves into Wyrdeer after you use Psyshield Bash 20 times in its agile style, in the move mastery system.
In the games
Stantler first appeared in Gold and Silver. It returns in Legends: Arceus, where it is found across Hisui, and it can be found in the Paldea and Kitakami regions of Scarlet and Violet.
In the anime
Stantler debuted in 'The Little Big Horn', where Brock helped a fawn rejoin its herd. In 'Different Strokes for Different Blokes' Paul caught a Stantler in Bewilder Forest and released it almost immediately.
Fun facts

- Nob Ogasawara, who translated the games into English, suggested 'Scaribou' for its name, but Nintendo of America did not accept it.
- According to Bulbapedia, no known Pokémon other than Stantler and Wyrdeer can learn Psyshield Bash.
