Wyrdeer is a Normal/Psychic-type Pokémon, the Big Horn Pokémon, number 899 (#0899) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Hisui region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 95.1 kg.

Wyrdeer is the Big Horn Pokémon of Hisui, a snow-grey deer whose golden antlers throw up invisible barriers. The people of Hisui prize its beard-like fur for keeping out the cold, and in Legends: Arceus one Wyrdeer lives in the Obsidian Fieldlands and carries you across it as a Ride Pokémon.

Lore

Biology

Wyrdeer is 1.8 m tall and 95.1 kg, grey with white spots and a white mane that looks like a beard. Its large golden antlers are shaped like radio antennae, each with a black orb near the base. The Pokédex says the orbs glow eerily when it raises invisible barriers, and that fur shed from its beard holds heat well, making warm winter clothing.

Behaviour

According to Bulbapedia, which cites the official Legends: Arceus site, Wyrdeer uses its antlers to guide herds of Stantler towards safe paths. It has sturdy legs for galloping and leaping over obstacles. Bulbapedia adds that it is implied to be extinct today, since Stantler can no longer evolve into it.

Habitat

It is a Hisui Pokémon, found in Legends: Arceus only in massive mass outbreaks in the Obsidian Fieldlands. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Wyrdeer has Intimidate or Frisk, with Sap Sipper hidden. It starts with Psyshield Bash, then adds Zen Headbutt, Megahorn, Calm Mind and Hypnosis. Bulbapedia says its psychic power is strong enough to distort space, and its 103 HP, 105 Attack and 105 Special Attack make it a bulky, hard-hitting mixed attacker.

Name origin

Wyrdeer may combine 'wyrd', an Anglo-Saxon idea of fate, 'weird' and 'deer'. The Japanese name is Ayashishi (アヤシシ), from ayashii ('strange') and an old word for deer.

Design inspiration

Wyrdeer seems based on several deer, mainly the Yezo sika deer, native to Hokkaido, which Hisui is modelled on, and the reindeer. Its antlers resemble Stantler's, and the way they branch also resembles a Yagi antenna. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Stantler evolves into Wyrdeer only in Legends: Arceus, after you use Psyshield Bash 20 times in its agile style.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus, where it debuted, one Wyrdeer is a Ride Pokémon and supporting character, called with the Celestica Flute. It is available in Scarlet and Violet and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero only by transfer from Pokémon HOME.

Fun facts

  • Wyrdeer, Ursaluna and Kleavor, Bulbapedia notes, are the earliest cross-generational evolutions since Sylveon built on an older Pokémon's ordinary form rather than a regional one.
  • It matches Farigiraf in several ways: both are Normal and Psychic types, both evolve from a Generation II Pokémon, and Sap Sipper is a hidden Ability for each.
  • At 95.1 kg, game data ranks it as the heaviest Psychic type introduced in Generation VIII.
