Lore
Biology
Drapion is a large purple scorpion, 1.3 m tall and 61.5 kg, built from violet and lavender segments that end in a tail with two stingers. It has four legs, huge claws, pointed blue-topped eyes and fang-like white teeth sticking out of its jaws. The Pokédex says its head can rotate 180 degrees, leaving no blind spots.
Behaviour
Drapion is proud of its strength, brutish and aggressive, and goes on rampages that wreck whatever is in its way. The Pokédex says its poison is potent but rarely used, because it prefers to win with brute force. Bulbapedia says it attacks anything that enters its territory.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it lives mostly in deserts and rocky places. It is wild in Galar, Sinnoh's Great Marsh in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Hisui in Legends: Arceus, but it is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Battle Armor and Sniper, with Keen Eye hidden, and the Pokédex says swords bounce off its sturdy shell. It strikes with Cross Poison, X-Scissor and Crunch, bites with Fire Fang, Thunder Fang and Ice Fang, and sets Toxic Spikes. Base Defense 110 and Speed 95 make it a quick, armoured attacker.
Name origin
Drapion may combine 'dragon', 'drastic' or 'Dracula' with 'scorpion'. The Japanese name is Dorapion (ドラピオン).
Design inspiration
Like Skorupi, Drapion probably started as a scorpion, here with huge claws that suit its Ogre Scorpion category. This is a fan reading, not an official statement.
Evolution notes
It evolves from Skorupi at level 40.
In the games
In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Drapion is part of Team AWD, the main antagonists of the Special Episode 'Here Comes Team Charm!'. In the main series it first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, where it is found in the Great Marsh once you have the National Pokédex.
In the anime
Debuted in 'Mutiny in the Bounty!' as J's Pokémon, and later wrapped its claws around Ash in 'Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu!'. Paul's Drapion beat Buizel, Staraptor and Torterra in Ash's Lily of the Valley Conference run.
