Lore

Biology

Croagunk is a dark ultramarine bipedal frog, 0.7 m tall and 23 kg, with yellow eyes ringed in black, wide flat teeth and orange cheek pouches that swell up. White bands circle its chest, set slightly higher on a female. Its middle fingers are orange, and the Pokédex says its cheek sacs and fingers hold poison that becomes medicinal once diluted.

Behaviour

Croagunk rarely fights fairly, but the Pokédex says that is strictly to survive. The Pokédex calls it dastardly, yet says its peculiar cry and comical looks have won it a measure of popularity. Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says it puffs up its poison sacs even in its sleep, and the sound sometimes wakes it.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it favours swamps and wooded areas. In Scarlet and Violet it is in Paldea's South and West Provinces and 2-star Tera Raids, but it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Anticipation and Dry Skin, with Poison Touch hidden. It dirty-fights with Taunt, Sucker Punch and Low Kick, jabs with Poison Jab and boosts itself with Nasty Plot. Base Attack and Special Attack are both 61.

Name origin

Croagunk may combine 'croak' and 'gunk'. The Japanese name Gureggru (グレッグル) may combine gureru ('to turn delinquent') with gerogero, a frog's croak or an exclamation of disgust.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Takao Unno as the designer. It may be based on a poison dart frog, and the white bands around its middle resemble sarashi, chest wraps, with the higher placement on females matching styles worn by women. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

It evolves into Toxicroak at level 37.

In the games

In Platinum, Looker appears with one briefly, and in Pastoria City it is the town mascot. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness a Croagunk in Wigglytuff's Guild runs the Swap Cauldron and says 'Meh-heh-heh'. Croagunk's first games were Diamond and Pearl.

In the anime

Brock caught one in 'Gymbaliar!'. It took over the job of dragging him away from attractive women, using Poison Jab each time he falls in love. 'Cream of the Croagunk Crop!' centres on a Croagunk festival in Pastoria City.

Fun facts

  • Its English name was revealed on 13 February 2007, and a blurry image led some fans to read it as 'Croalurk'.
  • In Platinum, stand behind the Croagunk Wall in Pastoria and a wild Croagunk may stroll past and walk off to the Great Marsh.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Croagunk is the sole fighter in Pokkén Tournament DX who can also be picked as a Support Pokémon.
  • Its Diamond, Pearl and Platinum sprites show pink cheeks, while its 3D models and artwork show yellow-orange.
