Lore

Biology

Drifloon is a round, purple balloon of a Pokémon, 0.4 m tall and 1.2 kg, with two stringy arms ending in yellow heart-shaped hands and a puffy white cloud on its head. The Pokédex says its body is filled with the souls of people and Pokémon, and that they spill out with a screaming sound if it bursts.

Behaviour

Drifloon is called the 'Signpost for Wandering Spirits' because it floats aimlessly. It seems to want company, but it is so light that children pull it about, and it runs from those who play too roughly. It dislikes heavy children and loves damp, humid seasons.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it appears in abundance during humid seasons. In Scarlet it drifts across Paldea's mountains and towns, while Violet players must trade for it.

Powers

Aftermath damages an attacker that knocks it out with a contact move, and Unburden doubles its Speed once its held item is used. Hidden Flare Boost belongs only to Drifloon and Drifblim. It strikes with Hex and Shadow Ball and can finish with Self-Destruct or Explosion. Its base HP is 90, but Defense 34 and Special Defense 44 leave it fragile.

Name origin

Drifloon combines 'drift' and 'balloon'. The Japanese name is Fuwante (フワンテ), which may combine fuwafuwa (soft and airy), fūsen (balloon) and fuantei (unstable).

Design inspiration

Drifloon looks like a balloon: the yellow X over its mouth resembles a puncture bandage, and its heart-shaped hands the weights on helium balloon strings. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Drifloon evolves into Drifblim at level 28, with no other condition.

In the games

Drifloon first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, where it can be found at Valley Windworks only on Fridays, once Team Galactic has been dealt with there. In Pokémon Pokopia it can take Ditto to a Dream Island if shown a Pokémon doll. It cannot be obtained in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In 'Drifloon on the Wind!', Marnie and Paige use four Drifloon for transport. In 'Foggy Pokémon Orienteering!', Ash hops across a gorge on several Drifloon to reach Bonnie.
