Ambipom is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Long Tail Pokémon, number 424 (#0424) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 20.3 kg.

Ambipom is the Long Tail Pokémon that grew a second tail-hand, and with two it rarely bothers to use its arms. Colonies link their tails into rings to show friendship, and the Pokédex says humans have occasionally been welcomed into the circle.

Lore

Biology

Ambipom is a purple monkey with two tails, each ending in a big, round hand whose three fingers have red tips. Split strands of hair stick up from its head, longer on females, and its ears are round with red insides. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 20.3 kg.

Behaviour

Ambipom leaps from tree to tree at brilliant speed and works in large colonies, linking tails with other Ambipom in what looks like friendship. The Pokédex says that when it wraps both tails round you and squeezes, it really likes you.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in large trees, and Bulbapedia places its colonies in heavily wooded areas, from tropical to boreal forests.

Diet

To eat, it shucks nuts with its two tails.

Powers

Ambipom's Abilities are Technician, which strengthens weak moves, and Pickup, with Skill Link hidden. It strikes with Double Hit and Fury Swipes, and the Pokédex says its consecutive two-tail attacks are very hard to dodge. With base Attack 100 and Speed 115 it is a fast physical attacker.

Name origin

Ambipom may combine 'ambi-' (both) or 'ambidextrous' with Aipom and 'palm'. The Japanese name is Eteboth (エテボース), possibly from 猿公 etekō (monkey), 得手 ete (strong point) and 'both'.

Design inspiration

Ambipom seems modelled on a New World monkey, with the prehensile tail exaggerated. Bulbapedia adds that it may vaguely reference the ahuizotl, an Aztec creature with monkey hands and a fifth hand on its tail. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Ambipom is the final stage of its line. Aipom evolves into it by levelling up while knowing Double Hit.

In the games

An Alpha Ambipom can be found at Hideaway Bay in Legends: Arceus, and the species first appeared in Diamond and Pearl as Aipom's evolution. In Scarlet and Violet it is not wild: in The Teal Mask Violet players evolve an Aipom and Scarlet players trade for one, and it appears in 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Dawn's Ambipom debuted in 'Journey to the Unown!', when her Aipom, formerly Ash's, evolved. Dawn used it in many Contests, and Bulbapedia counts it among her most talented Pokémon.

Fun facts

  • In Alola, Ambipom and the monkey Pokémon Passimian fight over trees, and the Ultra Sun Pokédex says Ambipom wins about half the time.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Gold's Aipom is named Aibo and was shown as an Ambipom in a flashforward before it actually evolved in 'Pleased as Punch With Parasect'.
  • Skill Link is a hidden Ability for only four Pokémon in the game data: Aipom, Ambipom, Minccino and Cinccino.
